Buick Regal deliveries in the United States totaled 951 units in January 2017, a decrease of 64 percent compared to 2,653 units sold in January 2016. It is worth noting that despite the headline-making 64 percent sales slump, January 2017 Regal sales were higher than they were in January 2015, during which the midsize sedan recorded 792 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take

A rendering of the upcoming, all-new 2018 Buick Regal
Now entering its seventh year on the market, the Buick Regal is beginning to show its age. In addition to that, it’s not a crossover, which is a negative in today’s market that has an insatiable thirst for crossovers.
Buick will address the former concern by introducing a completely-redesigned Regal for the 2018 model year. The all-new, premium midsize sedan will share the E2 platform, design, and most features with the 2018 Opel Insignia, 2018 Vauxhall Insignia, and 2018 Holden Commodore and is expected be available in four-door sedan and five-door wagon variants. As such, we expect the all-new Regal to spur an increase in interest in the marketplace, which will hopefully translate to growth in sales volume. However, the crossover craze of the car-buying public (at the expense of sedans) might put a damper on those efforts.

Sorry Buick and I know this won’t be popular here, but you just don’t offer what the American car buying majority wants anymore. When your demographic is finding more for their money in Hyundai’s Genesis or up level Kia’s or Toyota, it stands to reason you have become an automotive after thought. I am a GM fan and I think the product is nice, but I would never consider Buick. I would reach a little further to Cadillac or I would load up a Malibu, Impala, or Traverse to get everything I would from Buick for less. The last Buick that gave and still gives some excitement to car people was the Grand National and that was thirty years ago. Thirty whole years and even then the car wasn’t as popular as it is now to those who knew and know about them. Buick showed us what it could possibly do with the Avenir and Avista with great fanfare, but then said nah what the hell do you know consumer. In my opinion, I really think GM needs to put Buick on the shelf and invest more into Cadillac and Chevrolet for the American market.
One word: China.
The Buick brand would’ve been shelved long ago if not for Chinese demand. Seriously, I’ve been to Shanghai – the Chinese LOVE the brand. I believe it’s because the last emperor of China was driven around in one, haha.
