Buick stuck to a familiar formula with its Super Bowl 51 advertisement, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a successful one. The brand has played on its “That’s a Buick” motif for some time as it continues to redefine expectations of its vehicles for the consumer at large.
This time, NFL MVP Cam Newton and supermodel Miranda Kerr were center stage alongside the 2017 Buick Cascada Sport Touring and 2017 Buick Encore. The premise of the ad is simple: during a pee-wee football game, a father expresses his disbelief that the vehicles are in fact Buicks.
He states, “”If that’s a Buick, then my kid is Cam Newton.” Well, you can imagine what happens next.
The ad is meant to build momentum has Buick heads into 2017 with a handful of expected product launches, including the 2018 Regal and 2018 Enclave.
“Buick is experiencing unprecedented sales success and consumer awareness backed by remarkable third-party quality and reliability validation,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing. “Our latest vehicles like the Encore and Cascada belong in the spotlight on a global stage only the Super Bowl can offer.”

Fun, and better than last year’s.
Trying to imagine how all that’s gonna fit in a :30, vs the :60 shown here. Although the :60 will likely get lots of online views…
Never mind – just read they’re doing the long form version in the Super Bowl after all…
I didn’t like this ad until I saw the :30 version — which is tight and fast.
That said — it’s still pretty weak. I feel almost everyone in the ad is speaking unnaturally.
Part of me is wondering if there’ll be a reaction to the kid qb taking a hit.
It’s football, but Cam’s taken his share of hits, too. A feeble incomplete pass woulda achieved the same need for replacement by Cam.
I hope there’s no reaction to the kid getting sacked – but I wouldn’t be surprised.
What’s bizarre is the kid waves that he’s wide open. But then waves his hands ‘no’ when spotted.
I guess he’s worried that Cam is gonna throw a rocket? And ya, it’s pretty slapstick – the pass drives the kid 20 yds into the end zone. And the ref running into the table. Still better than OBJ last year. But whatever.
