Vintage Ad Break: First-Ever Hot Wheels Commercial Has Us Feeling Nostalgic As Ever

If you’re anything like us, that is, madly obsessed with cars and anything associated with them, you likely had a few Hot Wheels in the toy chest as a child. Though, again, if you’re anything like us, you may still buy them.

In 1968, these metal machined would enter the world and change how toy cars were perceived forever. Southern California-based Mattel developed Hot Wheels through the swinging 1960s, running a perfect parallel with California hot rod culture and Detroit muscle.

The first of many, many Hot Wheels to come were a tad different from what we know today, though. They featured “torsion bar suspensions”, which gave the cars some play in the chassis itself, and the hoods all popped open to reveal chrome engines. The famed red pinstripe tires are also present.

Take a walk down memory lane with us and cherish in childhood memories by clicking play right up above.

  1. Idiot Boy

All my life I’ve never stopped to worry ’bout a thing,
Open up and shout it out, an’ never try to sing,
Wondering if I’ve done it wrong,
Will this depression last for long, won’t you tell me,
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Once we had an easy ride and always felt the same,
Time was on our side and we had everything to gain,
    This could be like yesterday,
Is this me with your happy days,
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Ma and pa look back on all the things they used to do,
Never had no money and they always told the truth,
Daddy didn’t need no little toys,
Mommy didn’t need no little boys, won’t you tell me,
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
    Ow!
Yesterday was such an easy game for you to play,
Ah but then lets face it, things are easier today,
Yes you need some bringing down,
Get your feet back on the ground,
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
Where have all the good times gone.
