Joao Barbosa of Action Express Racing has put the Cadillac DPi-V.R on pole for the all-new prototype racecar’s first-ever race.
Barbosa turned in a best lap of 1:36.903 in qualifying in his No. 5 Mustang Sampling DPi.-V.R to take the first position on the grid. Dane Cameron closed out the front row for Cadillac in AXR’s No. 31 Whelen Engineering sister car, posting a lap just 0.070 seconds slower than Barbosa’s.
Barbosa was surprised at the outcome of the session, saying he and co-driver Christian Fittipaldi are usually faster on race day than in qualifying.
“We generally race better than we qualify,” he said. “This is going to be a tremendous race with the new Prototypes.”
Wayne Taylor Racing’s Cadillac DPi-V.R qualified fourth on the grid. The team’s No. 10 Konica Minolta entry was the fastest car for the majority of the qualifying session, however Ricky Taylor then pitted shortly before the session’s timer hit zero. Neel Jani just barely squeezed Cadillac out of a 1-2-3 qualifying session, turning in a lap of 1:37.123 late in the session in the No. 13 Rebellion Racing Oreca 07 Gibson to take third.
The 55th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona will kick off tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. ET.
