The GM Authority Take

Given the market’s general shift towards crossover utility vehicles from other vehicle types like sedans, the growth in Spark deliveries during December as well as the 2016 calendar year might come as a surprise to some. However, some potential reasons for the growth in Spark sales include that the vehicle is the only modern (and therefore competitive) vehicle in its size and price class in the U.S. and Canada, and that its utilitarian hatchback form factor bears some resemblance to a crossover. In addition, it’s possible that the Spark was part of Chevy’s substantial 31 percent (11,881 unit) increase in fleet deliveries in December.

The Spark received a handful of updates and changes for the 2017 model year, one of which is the addition of the Spark Activ equipment group that gives the city car a slightly more rugged, crossover-like appearance and a higher ride height. Hence, we believe that the addition of the Spark Activ options package could increase Spark sales even further in the near future. The trim launches in the first quarter of 2017.

  1. I wonder how the arrival of the Chevy Bolt EV has affected the sales numbers of the Chevy Spark, since GM announced the end of the Spark EV production.

    1. Since the Bolt EV is pretty much a direct replacement for the Spark EV, I wouldn’t say that it would negatively impact sales of the Spark. If anything, they’re complimentary.
