Chevy Equinox Sales Rise 24.6 Percent To 27,195 Units In December 2016

Chevrolet Equinox deliveries in the United States totaled 27,195 units in December 2016, an increase of 24.6 percent compared to the 21,827 units sold in December 2015. These figures represent the nameplate’s best monthly retail sales performance of all time.
During the 2016 calendar year, sales of the crossover utility vehicle decreased 12.8 percent to 242,195 units.

In Canada, the Chevy Equinox recorded 1,659 deliveries in December 2016, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to December 2015. During the 2016 calendar year, sales of the CUV totaled 19,197 units in Canada, down nearly 3 percent compared to the twelve months of 2015.

The GM Authority Take
Despite showing its age during its seventh year on the market, sales of the current second-generation Chevy Equinox remained strong in December while being down for the calendar year. We believe the impressive December sales figures were caused by the following two factors:
- A market shift to crossover utility vehicles from sedans, and
- Healthy model-specific incentives on the Equinox to close out the year
Meanwhile, a completely overhauled, 2018 Chevy Equinox is scheduled to launch in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2017. The vehicle features an all-new powertrain lineup while riding on an all-new architecture (GM’s D2 platform) that enables it to shed over 400 pounds in weight, contributing to improved fuel economy. The crossover also gets all-new sheetmetal and an all-new interior, and is also slightly smaller inside and out compared to the current model.

I have a Gen 1 Equinox (2005-2009) and it is almost perfect with great cargo capacity and the best rear legroom. As GM’s second best selling vehicle, I expect the Gen 3 Equinox to continue as a great selling CUV. But GM can do it better if a EREV Equinox is offered for 2018, too.
