Last week, General Motors announced it would be investing a sizable $296 million into the Tonawanda assembly plant in Buffalo, New York. However, we now know what GM is planning to do with the funds.
The Buffalo News reports the investment will be funneled to a future V8 engine line in the Generation V family and is expected to come to fruition around 2018.
The Generation V family of engines includes the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 found in the C7 Corvette Stingray and V8s found in GM’s full-size trucks and SUVs. This new line of engines could very well be the next step for pickups and SUVs.
But, it could also point towards a future engine found in a mid-engine Corvette, which is said to be arriving for 2019. If a mid-engine Corvette’s engine is going to be produced in Tonawanda, the timeline certainly lines up accordingly with other various intel.
As for the present, the investment secures 857 jobs and creates 67 new positions at the facility.

Saw a recent report that points to a NA 6.2L DOHC V8 called LT5 as the mystery engine.
Hopefully it will end up in Cadillacs like the ATS V or CTS V-Sport or CT6 V-Sport.
Or could this be the beginning of the end for the small block?
Jamdown, I believe you need to read about the future med engine Corvette Chevy LT 5 -6.2 V8 report. The Caddy is suppose have its own make of engine , It is a 4.5 DOHC Engine .
Cadillac will have there own engine it will be a TT DOHC 4.5 liter V8 engine. These Corvette C8 Zora ME will in itself have smaller displacement engines. Two v8’s, PHEV, and a V6 engine.
