Too bad. It’s a really good car in all versions — just in need of better pricing & packaging.
The pricing and packaging is already spot on, especially starting with the 2017 Model Year. The reason for the decline is simple: consumers are currently hot for crossovers. That’s the current state of affairs and the balance will swing back in due time… like a pendulum.
Agreed that pricing, especially when introduced, was its main ‘Achilles heel’. I do not think it ever recovered.
I think that pricing and packaging has hurt the ATS even more. It is still a problem for the CTS.
Corrent that the market is swinging over towards crossovers but the CTS and ATS are still losing sales at a pace greater that the segments they are in.
The CTS especially is down 2x the segment drop off. That is not just because the switch to crossovers.
Cadillac made the mistake of price parity with it’s main competitors even though it did not and still dooes not have the market appeal of the likes BMW, Mercedes, Audi or even Lexus. Cadillac ignored the fact that potential customers will pay more for a certain brands or product even if there is an equally competent product priced the same or even a little less.
Just because the CTS is as good or better as a 5 Series in just about all measurable metrics does mean a potential client will pay 5 Series money for the CTS.
In all fairness, the cts still falls short in interior refinement versus its German competitors. If it had a distinct price advantage, I think more folks would make the tradeoff.
Otherwise, with pricing parity, it’s a tougher sell. Most buyers either shop value or best in class.
That is kinda my point. Packaging and pricing really hurt the CTS compared to its main rivals.
Interior refinement is not a quantifiable matrix but your point is fair and I agree with you.
looks tired all ready.
Only you seem to think so. Not much reasoning with you, is there?
Could the CT6 be taking sales away from the CTS?
You nailed this one.
The CT6 is a better car than any CTS accept the V sport and V series. The CTS is short on details that are now being addressed when this model makes the change in name.
I hope that will fix the details but the trouble is the CTS and CT6 are too much sitting on top of each other. This was all due to many changes in management and plans. It will be interesting to see how they sort this out moving forward with the new models.
That’s a valid point but the CTS sales were dropping like a brick before the CT6 came around.
The CT6 has it’s own shortcomings as well.
The CTS is Cadillac’s best looking car of this century, and possibly ever. It could be losing sales to the CT6 as William suggests. And it’s getting old, typically sales of any car tank in the final years before a model change.
But I still think the basic problem is that the CTS doesn’t have the roominess and plush ride that is expected of a Cadillac, and it doesn’t have the badge that German car buyers want. That will continue to be a problem as long as Cadillac tries to give its cars German driving dynamics instead of American (or better stated “Cadillac”) ones.
The CTS was meant to compete with the Mercedes Benz E-class, and M-B buyers aren’t biting on a non-German car. While Cadillac buyers who never wanted a German car in the first place are disappointed in the ride.
If bigger, roomier, softer, plusher, American driving dynamics are what’s missing, the XTS should be selling like hotcakes.
N400, actually the XTS was meant to replace the DTS and STS. As such, it’s a hybrid between German and American luxury. No one who liked the DTS ride is satisfied with the XTS, that’s one reason I am hanging on to my DTS. There is no Cadillac sedan currently made that has anything approaching a “Cadillac ride” (or American luxury driving dynamics).
The XTS may come closest of the current Cadillac sedan line-up, but it’s not truly American in ride or styling (not angular enough); as a compromise/hybrid between American and German luxury it sells ok, especially in China, but could do better if fully American. At least the CTS is American in exterior styling, hits a home run there. CTS strikes out on the American “Cadillac ride”, and lacks the German badge for German luxury car lovers. Cadillac was meant to be a leader of true American luxury cars, not a follower of German sports sedans. The public seems to understand this more than Cadillac/GM management. They are voting with their wallets.
The truth is the XTS was. Cheap carry over from the Bail out.
The car is a product of the old GM not willing to fund Cadillac as needed.
They pumped what money they had into this car pre bail out and shelved it till they could finish it.
The idea was to have at least something new comeing out of the bailout and not waiting till the Alpha was done.
It was a car that was buying time one post bailout hit and replacing a DTS was not even a considration as they were now better funded.
This has been part of the problem as Cadillacs mission has changed as GMs financial out look changed. This has left us with a mix of product all over sending mixed messages. This is what JDN needs to sort out.
Also people need to say they are being German and under stand the segment just happens to be were the Germans are. They were first there but now this is were anyone asking the same money is.
This is a global segment and it is no longer one owned by one country.
Such a shame…The best Cadillac ever, and it comes at one of the worst possible times for sedans on the market! I too believe the CT6 simply offers more car for the same money; even though that car is underwhelming in many respects. And coupled with the red hot CUV/SUV demand, the CTS just cannot find traction in the market. Then there’s still the nagging issue of Cadillac’s aspirational pricing and poor brand perception, as others are pointing out.
I wonder if GM is thinking of having the CT6 just take over their midsize luxury sedan position, creating space for a larger, roomier ATS replacement…..Such a strategy worked in the past, I suppose it could work again as long as Cadillac focuses on quality. And I hope it means we can also get a potential Escala-designed, genuine flagship sedan to serve as the true large-and-in-charge, American-made Cadillac!!!
The CTS needs a redesign but I do not think that abandoning the mid-sized segment is the way to go.
Yes the ATS needs to grow a little especially in rear seat room but CTS is right there for interior dimensions relative to the segment.
I like the Escala design theme at the front although not the fastback rear styling.
I have changed my mind on needing a vehicle bigger than CT6 ‘flagship’. With some tweeking to ride quality, changing the transmission to the new 10 speed and a rethink on the interior design the car would be a standout.
Cadillac should make it’s flagship a mid-engined sports car based on the up coming Corvette (-actually Cadillac should get it’s version before Chevy but I digress).
The Cadillac version should be more luxury GT rather than all out racer. Leave the near race car to Chevy.
The other option for flagship would be an all-out version of the next Escalade (which I read should have an IRS). I should be a V-Sport version and more bespoke Platinum model. Price starting over $120000.
Just like the a mid-engined car (like the Ford GT at 250 units per year) you wouldn’t have to sell very many. It would be about making a statement and showing off your engineering prowess.
The CTS is my favorite Cadillac but the interior needs an upgrade (as does the ATS) and there needs to be an actual marketing campaign showcasing the car. I’m sure many people “dare greatly” to ignore Cadillac’s commercials because the first 30 seconds are nothing about the car but instead a fashion designer. I get where Caddy is coming from trying to link the two but they ought to be showing something thrilling and sexy to grab attention of viewers.
I think they should be sexy wagons or utility vehicles instead of sedans…lets face the facts….sedans arnt selling anymore….what about low and sexy utility vehicles that don’t look fat and stubby.
But that would look like turd.
The CTS is a good car , but right out of the gate people were turned off by the huge price increase from the previous model . So customers went elsewhere .
Cadillac wanted this car to compete with the germans in driving dynamics as well as the price and Cadillac still doesn’t offer the the same cache as the others .
I don’t think the CT6 is doing any harm to the CTS . One is more of a sport tuned car and the other is getting back to what alot of Cadillac owners are looking for , a big car with that Cadillac ” ride ” . But not the floating barge of the past just something closer to what was always a smooth ride and not a track car .
all current Cadillac cars doent look exciting…the front and rear look fat and baggy and the whole exterior is bland….I wish they would make them look like the Elmeraj with the true classic lines.
Today I Ordered a CTS in the color Moonstone Metallic. shortly after my dsr called me to say he had gotten info thatcadillac would not be painting any more vehicles that color for ’17. The color is still on their vehicle confiurator.
And they wonder why sales are down, it’s bonehead decisions like this that anger customers and then they go else where. Next stop for me is my Mercedes dealership. Where I can order and receive any color they offer.
