2017 Chevrolet Volt Drivetrain Named To ‘WardsAuto 10 Best Engines’ List

The 2017 Chevrolet Volt has been recognized for the third time by WardsAuto, as the publication named its propulsion system to the 10 Best Engines list.

The 1.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine is mated to an 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which provides 53 miles of pure electric propulsion. Together, 420 miles of range are possible and the EPA estimates 106 MPGe.

“The Chevy Volt propulsion system wins a spot on the Wards 10 Best Engines list for the second year in a row for three reasons,” said WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter. “It has a torquey, fun-to-drive personality. It offers impressive electric-only range of 53 miles and efficient gasoline-powered range whenever you need it for anxiety free driving. That is flexibility unequaled in the automotive world. And despite imitations, it continues to be one of the most unique and innovative propulsion systems ever mass produced.”

As previously stated, this is the third time the Volt has landed on the list, but this is also the second consecutive year it has managed to do so.

I wonder how they are going to do that, since the Ecotec engine only uses gasoline, while the two electric motors are what provide the 53 miles of pure electric propulsion with the 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Sean, you used the wrong propulsion elements!

    1. “Which provideS”. Singular. Meaning the latter (the electric component) provides the 53 miles on its own. Not the most clear sentence, but nonetheless correct.
