Joey Logano advanced to the final four round of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase at Homestead Miami with a win at Phoenix International Raceway Sunday.
In addition to Logano, reigning Sprint Cup Series champ Kyle Busch also advanced to Homestead with a second place finish. Former 2016 Chase hopeful Kyle Larson put Chevy in the top 3 with a third place finish.
Perhaps to some fans’ surprise, it was Dale Earnhardt Jr. sit-in Alex Bowman that dominated much of the 324-lap Can-Am 500. He led the first 250 laps from pole, but lost the lead after becoming entangled in a dramatic three-car wreck in overtime.
Matt Kenseth and Bowman sat on the front row for the Lap 317 restart with Busch and Logano lined up behind. As Busch got a strong run he went to dive down the inside of Bowman and nudged the No. 88 Chevrolet from behind, spinning him into Kenseth. Both Kenseth and bowman wrecked, while Logano took the lead with Busch in tow.
Kenseth recovered to finish 21st overall, while Bowman was sixth. The result means Ford’s Logano will face off with Toyota’s Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards at Homestead. All three will have to fend off six-time Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, however, and for that we wish them the best of luck.
