Jay Leno has one of the greatest jobs in the world. The man gets to drive cool, rare and badass machines for all of us to enjoy. His latest vehicle is no different.
Leno invited a 1964 Pontiac GTO on for the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, and it’s a special one. According to the owner, who purchased it from the original owner 22 years ago, this 1964 GTO is one of 10 left on this planet. It is equipped with the 389 cubic-inch V8 engine and mated to a four-speed automatic, and it has factory air conditioning.
It’s also a convertible and finished in proper York Town Blue. So, yes, it’s very, very rare.
So the story goes, John DeLorean, the man overseeing Pontiac engineering at the time, decided he would never get approval for a true Pontiac GTO as a new model. So, he offered up the 389 V8 as an option package with extra dressings. Thus, the muscle car era officially kicked off, as the gussied up Tempest became a major hit.
Check out the drive and grab more history on the car in the video right up above.
