Feature Spotlight: 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bed-Mounted, Full-Size Spare Tire

Chevrolet made it clear designers and engineers wanted to stay as close as they could to the Colorado ZR2 show truck when it came time to introduce a production variant. We’d say they’ve followed through on that promise, at least on paper with specifications.

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 also carries over an important aspect found on the show truck: the bed-mounted spare tire. Chevrolet stated a bed-mounted, full-size spare tire will be optional for customers and will bring the grand total to two full-size tires on board should you equip a second one under the truck.

“The bed-mounted spare tire adds a rugged look to ZR2 and serves a functional purpose. By relocating the spare to the bed, ZR2’s departure is improved and prevents any damage to the spare when you’re crawling over obstacles,”  said Rich Scheer, director of design for Chevrolet Truck.

To be clear, the bed-mounted spare tire does not mean you receive two spare tires from the factory. Instead, customers gain the versatility and may purchase a second tire to keep in the original space under the truck if deemed necessary.

We can’t imagine a second, 31-inch Goodyear Duratrac off-road tire will be inexpensive, but choices are always good to have.

  2. I have wanted one since it was introduced in 2014. Stop toying with me. Time to put up or loose the last Chevy I will ever want or buy. Dealers don’t seem to want to make a sale on 2017 Colorados either. and even less Diesels.
