Carl Edwards advanced to the Championship Four round of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase after winning the AAA Texas 500 from Texas Motor Speedway Sunday night.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver took the lead on Lap 258 of 293 in the rain-shortened race. A fast and well-timed pit stop helped him lead the final 36 laps of the race to beat early leader Joey Logano and take his third win of 2016 and the 28th of his career.
Logano led 178 of 188 laps before getting passed and losing out to Edwards in the closing stages. He and pole-sitter Austin Dillon battled it out early in the race, however Dillon spun on Lap 255 and then crashed out seven laps later after making contact with Kevin Harvick. Dillon turned up 37th overall.
Harvick recovered from the contact with Dillon to post a sixth place finish, however the Stewart-Haas Chevy driver will likely need a win at Phoenix next Sunday if he wants to advance to Homestead. Logano and Kyle Busch are tied for third in the Chase standings, while Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin sit one and two points behind them, respectively.
NASCAR heads to Pheonix next for the Can-Am 500 on Sunday, November 13th, 2016. Click here for full results from Texas and here for a full schedule of next weekend’s NASCAR festivities.
