The GM Authority Take
We suspect that the sharp decrease in Chevy Impala deliveries is mostly attributed to the following two factors:
- An increased market demand for crossovers and SUVs over sedans, and
- A planned reduction in fleet sales, per GM North Ameirca’s strategy to decrease sales to rental car fleets

The Impala needs to go a different route. It needs to go rear wheel drive and offer a Performance version ala the Chevy SS. By doing that it can also capture some of the Law inforcement and Taxi business. If they don’t do that they need to at least make it bigger by giving it the Lacrosse dimension to further seperatnit from the Malibu. Jus some ideas thrown out there. I am sure GM will do what they think is the best. Which by the way is not alway the right thing in my opinion. I know what they say about opinions but hey there it is.
Hell nah!
Even at the current sales volume the Impala is still the best selling large car on the market.
What platform would they put this RWD large performance car of yours?
They need to change the front and rear ends. 2014 thru 2017 models are the same except this year they put Premier on the back. Also change it so it doesn’t look like a Malibu.
I understand the reduced sales because of SUV sales but almost a 50% drop in a month , something else is at work here . I believe Malibu sales may be a big part in Impala’s decline as well as it being FWD only . Plus I understand GM’s decision to not sell so many units to fleet sales which would hurt resale values .
It’s a nice car and loaded for less than others in it’s class , I hope ( if they hold on to it ) that it finds a different platform where you would be able to get it in an AWD version .
I don’t believe the new Malibu is the reason, at least around where I am. The new Malibu hangs out on the lot forever it seems.
Impala SS should be the Chevy SS replacement when it gets cancelled. I would think it would easily take sales away from the Dodge Charger.
I Hear you.
Six or seven thousand units of this new SS replacement or the same volume of the current Impala, what is the difference?
RWD (Sportiness… Anybody remember the Impala SS from the mid-nineties?…Awesome car) vs. a somewhat staid FWD family sedan.
Would a stretched Alpha platform be a good fit for the Impala SS? Legitimate question. This car would be too expensive if they put it on the Omega platform.
I have come very close, very close to purchasing a new Impala two or three times the past year. I am GM thru and thru, for over 50 years, and I remember What the name Impala represented…sadly it seems, GM does not. The current Impala LTZ is a nice looking All American family sedan, that would sell just as well under another name, Bel Air, Chevelle, etc. My thought for GM, is to keep it Simple…they have the Car already, it is everything an Impala stands for ? Bring the SS to Production here, in the USA, add some nicer interior features, including color choices, and on the exterior, wheel choices and true performance dress up choices, and Advertise it, promote it, take Pride in It…And don’t make the Mistakes of the Past…Place it as the Flagship of the Chevy lineup, a fully dressed V-8 RWD Performance automobile, with limited Options…and If and When that happens, Please e-mail me an Order form, so I can park the new Impala SS next to my beautiful 2015 Silverado LTZ with the awesome 6.2 V-8, with the Borla exhaust option. Bottom line: Chevy Must pick up Where Pontiac once Was…The Performance Division of GM. Thanks for listening…
they should replace the sedans with handsom CUVs that are appealing in design with driving dynamics….this isn’t the 1970s anymore and big sedans arnt the style anymore.
If GM could make a performance CUV on par or better than the Trailblazer SS…Count me in !!
The reason sales are down is production is down they are not producing as many. Malibu is taking a ton of impala clients
PS: Thanks much to GM PDT, for your AWD Comment, on the hopefully soon next Impala SS. Please offer it in RWD for the Chevy loving Enthusiasts, who will Never take the car out in bad weather, especially on salted roads…and AWD for those who feel that need, and don’t mind paying the Additional $4,000 to $5,000 dollars. My beautiful new Silverado, took considerable thought, because we moved from the California Coast a few years ago, to driving the Rural areas of Northern Nevada and California…I had never even considered the purchase of a 4×4 pickup, let alone the additional $4,000. So, if your listening out there GM, please offer us the Choice of AWD as an Option ? Thanks again, for listening to a life long GM Guy
I’d buy a NOX over a Malibu….the new Malibu looks frumpy and fugly…I love the new 2018 NOX.
Hell nah!!
Part of the reduction would also be due to GM discontinuing the Impala Classic as they reported these sales as Impala sales and did not break it down separately. I also agree with having AWD as a option. If they offered this I would buy one in a second for the wife.
Very, very true…along with the huge discounts, to boost the sale of the rather frumpy Malibu…which, even in the Premier series, lacks the comfort of a world class automobile. We owned a 2011 Chevy Malibu LTZ 6 Cylinder, until last Spring…a far more comfortable, and smoother performing automobile…my wife truly regrets parting with it now.
If you think your 2011 Malibu LTZ was more comfortable than a 2017 premiere Malibu you haven’t driven one long enough. Stat after stat proves how amazing the new Malibu is. There is not a car in its segment that even compares in overall quality
Here GM has a car thought of highly by owners and magazines alike. Heck it has been CR recommended and if not mistaken highest rated family car.
Sadly GM always does their best to curtail momentum of winners–in the Impalas situation no AWD and not updating vehicle with newer technology as an eight or nine speed tranny sure makes you think they are not interested in selling it.
Please keep in mind that in spite of all the previous negatives, it is still selling at about 6k units a month, something a rwd will not. There would be almost nil sales in North or Midwest . Would also be packaging negative for non performance market. I appreciate a bonafide ImpalaSS as anyone but it will not sell in near the volume of current design even if they sell SS and regular rwd.
There is nothing about the Malibu that is technology lacking. The 6spd transmission is doing better than any other transmission in the segment. The 2.0 turbo is incredible as far as performance. AwD is the only drawback but Gm is trying to avoid brand caniblism with Buick. Ask any master tech. They have the components to make any of them AwD
I think the one reason GM isn’t putting AWD on Impala is, Lacrosse.
I warned people that the FREE TURD IN THE BACKSEAT campaign would backfire.
