2017 C7 Corvette Grand Sport Faces Porsche 911 Carrera S In Head2Head Battle: Video

The very first episode of Motor Trend’s Head2Head was quite similar to this one. It featured a then-new C6 Corvette Grand Sport versus an also then-new Porsche 911.
Fast forward to present day and the C7 Corvette has certainly kicked things up a notch, and the 2017 C7 Corvette Grand Sport continues to be heralded as the goldilocks of the sports car. But, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S has also come out swinging with forced induction and a four-wheel steer system.
While the Porsche may look like a winner on paper, the C7 Grand Sport’s recipe is a tasty one. It takes every bit of capability from the C7 Corvette Z06 without the crazy power. It’s the best of both worlds. And, while the Porsche creams the Grand Sport in a straight line, there’s a lot more to the story on the track.
So, press play above and see if a Corvette is truly better than a Porsche.
Agreed that 7 speed is for purist but 8 speed automatic is quicker! Much of speed advantage of Porsche would disappear!
But put the vette sticky rubber on the 911 and the paying field would be evened out once again.
Take the price differential put it in mods and the Porsche has no advantage!
Precisely! Add the upgraded heads/cam package available (same as used in the new 535HP crate engine shown at SEMA) and the Poorsche ,lol, now loses in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile as well. Give the GS the 8spd auto and the 911 simply has no chance and forget the price tag as no Poorsche can hit that value mark, on the street nor the track.
It also makes people wonder if GM is putting 4 wheel steering on the next corvette
Why do they always test Vettes against cars that cost so much more? This Porsche cost more than a Z06 Vette, test it against a Z06
I enjoy seeing what the underdog can do. It makes GM look all the more impressive when their vehicles can hang with another vehicle costing 50, 75, even 100% more. Heck, when the Z/28 came out, every magazine under the sun was throwing more expensive adversaries at it. In the end, the Z held its own or even beat the pricier competition. JMHO. 🙂
I concur wholeheartedly as I’m a firm believer in the bang for the buck perspective and even more, what mods can be applied for short money comparatively speaking that can Improve said underdog to achieve a higher level of performance. This achieves two things. First, it out performs first and foremost for much less $$ and second, it will be a wolf in sheeps clothing on the street, spanking most rival’s @$$ before they can say, WTF???!
This is the first time I’ve heard anyone saying that the C7 Corvette Z06 makes too much horsepower.. and isn’t the upcoming C7 Corvette ZR1 scheduled to make even more than the 650 hp of the current LT4 supercharged 6.2L V8; this writers are a funny bunch as they complain when your car’s engine doesn’t make enough horsepower and they complain because they think it makes too much horsepower.
I’ve never heard a ‘professional’ race car driver say they couldn’t make the C7 Corvette Z06 to do what they wanted or that the car made too much power as these ‘writers’ might simply need to contact someone like Mario Andretti to teach them to drive.
Unfortunately, it’s not about too much HP but how it’s applied, which in the Z06, must be applied with due diligence on the road course and street . In a straight line, the Z06 HP level is virtually optimum with the right tire. While a little more HP is OK as in the hellcats, the problem lies in getting that HP to the ground, especially around a track which is world of difference from the 1/4 mile. As soon as you try to apply that power around corners without a track dedicated/adjusted suspension, you lose the @$$ end (which is why the new ZR1 will emulate the viper ACR’s down force while increasing HP to offset drag) . If you noticed, in the video of the 1/4 mile/standing start, even the GS’s power level had trouble hooking up as the tires went up in smoke. Sometimes, as much as I hate to admit it, less is more depending on where your weight is distributed based on design. The porsche is near the rear wheels and the vette is not. This helps hookup and quickness while the rear steering is the only thing that helps the porsche in corners while the vette is a 50/50 balance.
In summation I would say that IF a twin turbo option like in the caddy’s Twin Turbo V6 LF4 were applied to the LT4 sans the supercharger, you would see less immediate boost and perhaps a less immediate application of power like what this porsche and the 488 ferrari utilize further up in the RPM band. It’s the SC’d application of instant boost that’s great on the 1/4 mile but sucks on the road course track which is why you don’t see it in any road course racing, anywhere. Turbo’s are far more efficient as well and lag can be overcome in many ways.
Porsche bias
Inaccurate driving
Never heard of any professional drivers unable to control ANY C7

I question the pricing cited for the GS. The car is being sold for $60K and approximately $78K with all options. This video claims the price of the car is $100K, just not true, even with the limited edition, which was not tested. Personally I’ll take 2 GSs in yellow and blue, and they can keep that baby blue 911 at the same price.
