Joey Logano has advanced to the Chase Round of 8 with a win at Sunday’s Hellman’s 500 from Talladega.
The Ford driver took the checker flag following a four-lap overtime battle with runner-up Brian Scott. Toyota’s Denny Hamlin rounded out the top three, while Chevrolet’s Kurt Busch and Ford’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. completed the top five.
A stroke of luck helped Logano on his way to the win: Chase hopefuls Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. both retired from the race with blown engines, knocking them out of the Round of 12. Austin Dillon and Chase Elliott, who finished ninth and twelfth Sunday, respectively, join Keselowski and Truex Jr. on the Chase sidelines.
Chevy’s Kevin Harvick finished seventh Sunday, while Jimmie Johnson finished 23rd. The pair secured places in the Chase Round of 8 with respective wins at Kansas and Charlotte. Harvick, Johnson and Kurt Busch are the three remaining Chevy drivers in championship contention.
