Canadian union Unifor was successful in securing additional investment by General Motors, allowing the Oshawa assembly to live another day. In fact, the Oshawa plant will be very busy soon.
Ahead of planned production of the Chevrolet Silverado, GM Oshawa will be hiring 100 new workers by February 1, 2017, according to The Windsor Star. 2018 Chevrolet Equinox production will also stay put at the CAMI plant in Canada, with Oshawa reportedly taking over additional production as well. The report states output will increase from 375 vehicles a day to 400.
The new vehicle production is only part of a $554 million investment into Canadian manufacturing by General Motors, which includes the St. Catharines, Oshawa and CAMI facilities.
In the meantime, the consolidated line at the Oshawa plant will shut down, but no jobs will be shed with its closure.
