It’s the end of an era at the General Motors Flint Metal Center. Paul Edwards, an 84-year-old employee at the plant, has officially retired from his position after an astounding 63 years, according to local news affiliate WANE.
Edwards began his career in 1953 and although he was offered promotions, he consistently enjoyed doing the work himself more. Edwards officially retired from his position as a machine repairman.
Following a celebration with workers past and present, Edwards isn’t sure if he’ll be gone very long. The Flint plant has reportedly already offered the man a part-time welding position.

Congratulations, Paul, and thanks for your years of dedication to GM and the American auto industry!
I hope GM leverages skilled, dedicated, long-time employees to train and inspire newer employees. It seems like there’s a “brain drain” across many industries as experienced employees with experience and good work ethic retire. Hard work, experience, and ingenuity are so crucial to success.
This is admirable! Long term loyalty in a single job is very rare, since most employees jump jobs for better work conditions, home relocations, and others. I worked 37 years and five months under the same phone company, which was merged with another, later changed ownership twice more. I only have read that some women did work 40 years under the same company, because this is an established company limit when after 40 years the employee will not accumulate any extra benefits.
Great story for all of us. If the job still satisfies us, and we are still capable, then go for it. I would be honored to meet this man.
This is very cool. We tell kids to find a job you love and you will never go to work. This man is a living example of that message.
