In the department of worst kept secrets sits the upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Cruze diesel, preparing to return following Volkswagen’s astounding diesel emission scandal. But, how about some good news surrounding a diesel powertrain?
Specifically, the upcoming 1.6-liter CDTi turbo-diesel engine will be mated to either an automatic or manual gearbox this time, according to Car Scoops. It will be the first time a manual transmission will be offered alongside the Cruze diesel since its debut in the first generation Cruze sedan.
Furthermore, the diesel and manual gearbox won’t be limited to just the sedan, either. The hatchback will receive the same 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine, and the option to row your own will be present on all trims save for the headlining Premier variant.
The move to offer a manual might be General Motors latest step in courting scorned Volkswagen owners away from their German ties. The automaker has stated countlessly Volkswagen’s emission trouble has not stalled development of future diesel applications.
If the 2017 Cruze will be a tad too small for you, do know the same diesel engine will be available with the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox.

Diesel, manual, hatchback… holy cow. Can’t wait to order one up.
This is excellent news! I would say that lacking a manual transmission would be a deal breaker. But this should seal the deal for me! All i now need to know is when is the day it goes on sale?
Many people should be excited for this news. The thought of a diesel and manual transmission has induced much yearning amongst car people.
The only way to gain the ex VW Diesel customers is to have the manual transmission option. I personally would not consider an automatic. If they will offer the manual transmission I would certainly order one as soon as is available.
I just sold my Golf TDi manual and I’m waiting for the new Cruze CDTi manual.
I drove one Astra with the 1.6 TDCi engine and really liked the performance and fuel consumption. It will be a winner, lots of ex VW owners will end-up buying the Cruze.
Smart move GM.
Too bad Fiat Chrysler does not bring the Diesels to North America. They too have awesome Diesel engines.
Looked at the gas Cruze MPG figures and the EPA is rating the automatic better than the manual – HOW???
2017 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4 L, 4 cyl, Automatic (S6), Turbo, Regular Gasoline 34 MPG Ave, 30 City, 40 hwy.
2017 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4 L, 4 cyl, Manual 6-spd, Turbo, Regular Gasoline 32 MPG Ave, 28 City, 39 hwy.
Interesting they are going to a 9 speed auto for the diesel. My 2014 diesel definitely needs at least 2 more gears than the 6 speed. Lifetime average has been 46 MPG combined.
Anybody know when the Manual is coming out
No, but I’d like to know as well. Looking forward to test driving one!
More than a e month ago the GM website chat room told me I could order a 2017 Cruze 1.6L diesel with 6 speed manual. I want to order one but have been frustrated. You need to write a blank check. (i.e.) Dealers can’t quote a price.
I drive a 2014 2.0L diesel Cruze and have averaged 42 mpg over 90,000 miles to date. Put 245,000 miles on a 2.7L manual A6 before that. Eager to drive the 2017 Cruze diesel with manual tranny. I even offered to drive to Lordstown to drive one.
