On this episode of The Smoking Tire’s One Take a company known as Detroit Speed invited Matt Farah out to North Carolina for a ride in a 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. This G-body is mostly original with only 81,000 miles on the clock, but it rides much more like a car of today. Farah had met up with Andy Stapp of Detroit Speed to find out what makes this Monte Carlo SS more modernized.
As you’d expect, it has upgraded steering components, suspension, chassis, brakes, wheels, and tires. Stapp explains that the Monte Carlo utilizes a QUADRALink rear suspension, upper and lower control arms by Detroit Speed, DSC shocks, and an SA steering box, among other goodies.
Farah seems quite impressed by the ride quality, and while it has the comfort of a cruiser, it also has “great steering feel,” and can hold its own through the corners.
All it seems to be missing is an LS-swap, if you ask us.

How about a 5-speed?
Never thought there was that much wrong with the original G Body suspension that a good set of shocks and bushings wouldn’t fix!
That Dodge they stopped for a look at was very similar to the Chrysler Valiant sold in Australia in the very early 60s. Not sure if Dodge sold a full size version in the US.
