It was a sad series of unfortunate events that led to the death of 82-year-old Uber driver, J. Gerald Smith.
According to local news affiliate WPTV, the accident occurred in Delray Beach, Florida, when 60-year-old Roger Wittenberns crossed an intersection at a high rate of speed in his Lamborghini Murcielago. He was followed by his 61-year-old girlfriend, Patty Ann McQuiggin, who was behind the wheel of a Porsche 911.
Wittenberns struck the Uber driver’s Buick Enclave, leaving Smith in critical condition before he passed away later in the evening, according to police. Wittenberns was ejected from the Murcielago in the impact and is in serious condition.
Meanwhile, McQuiggin fled the scene following the incident and ditched her 911 at a local restaurant. She was later tracked down but refused to make a statement.
Wittenberns told police he had been drinking with his girlfriend following the accident. Police say Smith had obeyed all local traffic laws and did nothing wrong to cause the accident.
Reckless driving aside, this is a major reason the enclave being replaced in the near future with a model that satisfies the all important small-overlap test which may have prevented this fatality.
the current model was never tested for small overlap, and something tells me this idiot was not just doing 40 mph in a Lamborghini, and it wasn’t a small overlap head-on collision anyway…
Major reason? So ultimately, the cause of death was (in you opinion) the inadequate safety standards of the Enclave?
You sound like an ambulance chasing lawyer
No I think he is just making the point that the platform is old and today’s standards are so much higher.
Lets face it the MPG standards are higher and going higher. Also with every passing year they make the crash test even tougher to meet the 5 star rating. It is not so much the present model is unsafe it is the fact the new models are expected to do better by the government.
Cars are safer today than ever but any platform that is old will never meet the 5 star rating as we move forward.
The 4th gen F body died as it could not meet the next year standard in anyway. GM was out of money and sales were flat. That is why we lost the Camaro and Firebird then.
Yes the guy in the Lambo was the prime cause. The other factor is the driver was 80 plus years old and can more easily suffer injury. Also we did not know his health that could have played a factor here.
This was a preventable crime and I hope they toss the book at the guy. It is time to stop calling things like this an Illness and hold people responsible for their actions. If I read correctly they already slapped his wrist for this before and they evidently did not get his attention.
If they kill themselves that is one thing but when they take innocent lives that is a whole different ball game.
So tragic for the victims family – totaly preventable had someone not decided to drink and drive!
It was only out of sheer, morbid curiosity that I Googled the Lambo driver’s name.
Let’s just say I feel badly for the Enclave driver encountering these two mooks in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
Let’s just say both speed racers each had two license-losing infractions under their belts. Although I’d wager neither were wearing their belts.
