GMC Terrain Sales Decrease 35 Percent To 6,004 Units In August 2016

GMC Terrain deliveries in the United States totaled 6,004 units in August 2016, a decrease of 35 percent compared to the 9,237 units sold in August 2015.

In the first eight months of 2016, sales of the Terrain have decreased 14.08 percent to 62,256 units.

In Canada, the Terrain recorded 827 deliveries in August 2016, a slight decrease of 8.62 percent compared to August 2015. In the first eight months of the year, sales of the vehicle totaled 7,163 units in Canada, a minuscule decrease of 0.42 percent compared to the first eight months of 2015.

The GM Authority Take

Introduced for the 2010 model year, the first-generation Terrain is now entering its eighth year in production. The crossover has received minor changes throughout its lifespan, so it’s quite astonishing that it has sold so well given its maturity in the highly-competitive crossover space.

In general terms, the slow-down in Terrain sales is very likely the combined result of two factors:

  1. GM North America’s focus to decrease higher-volume less profitable fleet sales in favor of lower-volume yet more profitable retail sales
  2. A reflection of the market favoring more modern crossovers with which the Terrain competes

Opportunely, General Motors is working on an all-new, second-generation GMC Terrain. Expected for the 2018 model year, the new Terrain will ride on an all-new architecture (GM’s D2 platform), feature all-new exterior and interior designs, become more fuel efficient, and shed some weight thanks to its new bones. It’s also expected to shrink slightly in exterior dimensions while maintaining the interior space of the current model.

Common sense would dictate that the introduction of the all-new, second-gen Terrain should cause sales of the compact CUV to rebound.

  1. I previously owned a 2012 SLT-2 AWD and loved it so when it was time for a new vehicle I bought a 2016 Denali AWD
    and I am very pleased with it . Initially the refreshening was for just one year but GM decided to keep it going for one more year . They have made a decent profit on both the Terrain and Equinox , even more so on the Nox .
    But it is time for a completely new model , the competition is coming to market with better packages in terms of interior space , design and weight . Plus both models need to find their right spot as a compact and no longer a tweener .
    GM is doing a great job keeping prying eyes away from the newbies .

  2. We have a SLT-2 2012 and love it. It has done all we needed it to do.

    I was not a Terrain fan but the wife wanted one and I was ok with it as she had to drive it. But once we got it I have really enjoyed the Terrain.

    The Terrain has been one vehicle that defies tradition and was selling more each and every year on the market. Few models do that. But it’s time has come and GM did get a good run out of this. For what really is an old platform they did a nice job with it. The only real complaint we have had is the interior packaging is not great with the seats not folding flat and the intrusion of the rear strut towers.

    The Seats not folding flat have been a love hate. While it has been an issue at times it has also been a blessing when I have had long items I needed to clear over the center console. It raised the loads up enough it cleared.

    As of now if we go for a replacement it will likely be a Acadia as it is now close to the same size as our Terrain and close in price. The new Terrain I expect to be smaller but still a very good vehicle. Our needs are for something that is about the size of the present model. We have no need for larger model and the smaller will fall short on hauling our sons Soap Box Derby Race Car.

    Once GMC has all their new models out they should have a good assortment of SUV models. We have yet to see all of what they have planned yet.

    The Denali will be offered on everything as with a few simple and cheap trim items they add a hefty mark up on these models and it is pure profit.

    We went with the SLT 2 and did not wait for the Denali as we really did not care if we had a wood trimmed wheel, more Chrome on the grill and added Stitching and lighted rockers.

    We did want the 19″ wheels and we got them.

    I am glad that people like the Denali but I really wish they would toss in a better engine or more upgraded suspension to really sweeten the vehicle for the added cost. Both would not be that expensive to do and would have secured my order.

  3. Terrain’s never been a big fleet-sales vehicle.

    It’s a good CUV – but the boxy look, the flared wheel wells … well, since it’s intro 8 years ago, there’s more competition to choose from.

    Yes, the margins are good. But those have to be under pressure when the bottom is falling out of sales … I haven’t checked, but I suspect there are already incentives in place, or on the way. Kind off a long wait (2018) for a new one, but like I said, it’s a good vehicle, dependable and some nice tech and expandable storage options. Not that great looking, though.

    1. Looks are subjective and GM played this right. While nearly identical to the Nox it played a different style and has sold in great numbers even at a higher price to the Chevy.

      As for Expandable Storage options it was very limited compared to many new models and that is part of the criticism by the two of us above that actually own the model. few bins and other things to store much as well as a lot of wasted space due to the locations of the hard points of the vehicle. One must remember this was based on the same platform Opel car platform GM used for Chevy and Buick. The first attempt with the Torrent and Nox was ok but they really found their ground when they oved it to a little larger size. The Saturn Version never did great and the Captiva we never knew as it was fleet only.

      In full disclosure the V6 model was right as rain but the 4 cylinder in the early years suffered engine cylinder issues and often had either high oil use of engine failure. Having spent time on the Nox and Terrain Forums I can say it was far from isolated. But many owners liked the vehicle enough they bought a second one just with the V6, Most 4 cylinders did not suffer issues and for the most people enjoyed them too.

      The lack Fleet sales is a bonus for owners as it has not impacted resale and resale values have been very good on these.

      The Terrain for a Vehicle that really started life as a Pontiac and late in the game was changed to a GMC with only some outside restyling that hinted of Hummer did well. While they did keep the same Chevy interior with only a Pontiac red lit dash it did not hurt sales. Also the styling Lutz tried to get them to add some Hummer Big shoulders to the GMC line and that helped too here as if you visit the forums the split on styling is much like politics.

      As for me we have no regrets buying ours and as you see above like the first post this is a vehicle that changed very little and got a lot of repeat buyers who spent more money for a vehicle that was nearly identical. That says a lot about loyalty in a market that today has so little.

      If the next model match this ones performance in the market GMC will do very well.

      1. Yeah, those stotorage options were fairly flexible upon introduction, but have been surpassed by others…

        But I wasn’t disagreeing – it’s a fine performer. The look isn’t for everyone (what is?), but a new model can’t come soon enough.

  4. I like that this and the Nox are differentiated by different styles (round vs boxy). Do you think GM would drop a turbo 4 w/ an optional v6 in the Terrain to differentiate it?

    1. My wish is they would offer a V6 but my reality says it will be a 4 and Turbo 4. I also feat it will be the Smaller 1.8 Turbo too.

      I am sure the engine will perform fine but I really prefer the larger engine but the future is all about MPG and finding more MPG to meet future regulations.

      Electric is not a real option on the SUV and CUV segments as the aero numbers are poor. Vehicles with large frontal profiles just cut a larger drag number. This is why the Tesla X is really more like a tall car than a truck.

  5. In 2012 the Terrain wasn;t offered in Denali trim but you could basically option one out to almost be a Denali . I agree about the little trim add ons not really worth the price increase but I got such a deal I thought WTF and drove one home . The Terrain does everything I ask of it , and in the cold snowy winters of Michigan it will get me where I need to go and if I want alittle fun I turn off the T-control . There is alot of wasted space and wish for a more High Output engine but dreams aren’t reality . The biggest thing that I have never liked in both T’s is the turning radius , for such a small trusk it is awful . Several times in parking lots I have waved people on because I need a boatload of room to park .

    1. The Denali was really a 2013 but intro’d in April of 2012 as a early 2013. We bought out SLT 2 about a month before the Denali was released.

  6. I did spend some time in the new Acadia today and here is what I found.

    The new one has a much larger and comfortable front seat area. Plenty of leg room and comfortable seats. It feels lower than my Terrain with 19″ tires.

    The second row has more than enough room for my six foot frame with out the front seats even coming close to my knees. The seat is contoured much better and comfortable. It also has cooling vents in the roof for the back seat fixing a major issue in the Terrain of poor second row ventilation.

    The third tow is good for kids or people with out legs. It is a feature some treasure and others like me could do with out. They do fold flat and make way for a much larger cargo area in length and width than the Terrain.

    Price appears from $39K for a SLE to 49k for a decent Denali.

    I need to see the new Terrain but I think we are going to be in a V6 Acadia next time around. We just need the extra room.
