GMC U.S. Sales Fall 14 Percent To 42,440 Units In August 2016

Sales of GM’s premium truck and SUV vehicle brand, GMC, decreased in both the United States and in Canada in August 2016.

In the U.S., GMC sales decreased 14 percent to 42,440 units.

August 2016 retail sales were down 12.8 percent, or 5,769 units, year-over-year to 39,145 units, representing 92.2 percent of total GMC sales for August 2016. That compares to 44,914 retail sales in August 2015, which represented 91 percent of total GMC sales.

Despite the drop, Big Red achieved its highest monthly Average Transaction Price (ATP) on record, at $45,000. In addition, penetration of the Denali high-end trim level/sub-brand reached more than 28 percent, the highest on record.

Fleet sales were down 25.9 percent, or 1,154 units, year-over-year to 3,295 units, representing 7.8 percent of total GMC sales for the month. That compares to 4,449 fleet sales in August 2015, which represented 9 percent of total GMC sales. The notable decrease in fleet sales is a result of GM’s focus on more profitable retail sales.

Individual model sales performance was as follows:

  • GMC Acadia sales decreased 32.59 percent to 6,101 units
  • GMC Canyon sales increased 38.79 percent to 3,363 units, for its best August ever
  • GMC Savana sales decreased 6.99 percent to 692 units
  • GMC Sierra sales decreased 17.72 percent to 17,478 units. The full-size pickup truck family recorded its best year-to-date sales performance since 2006.
  • GMC Terrain sales decreased 35 percent to 6,004 units
  • The Yukon and Yukon XL had their best August since 2007:
    • GMC Yukon sales increased 18.5 percent to 5,324 units, recording its 12th consecutive month of year-over-year growth
    • GMC Yukon XL sales increased 59.91 percent to 3,478 units

In Canada, GMC sales decreased 15 percent to 6,969 units. Individual model sales performance was as follows:

  1. hope they keep falling, build a full size reg cab longbed with a standard transmission again, like you used to, you know a real truck, but you can still use all the cheap plastic interior like you do now. just put in a stick. i could care less about gas mileage. i get about 12 now. and i can’t get rid of it cause you don’t make a truck anymore.

    Maybe that’s why I just read GM’s looking for a new advertising agency for GMC.

    Too bad, since the Canyon and the Yukon margin machines are doing well.
