Eight GM Vehicles Make North American Car And Truck Of The Year Semifinals

If there’s evidence General Motors is building some of the most competitive vehicles it ever has, its standings in the North American Car and Truck of the Year semifinals list is a good place to start.
GM has eight vehicles represented on the NACTOY semifinals list from each of its North American brands. They include:
- Buick Cascada
- Buick Envision
- Buick LaCrosse
- Cadillac CT6
- Cadillac XT5
- Chevrolet Bolt EV
- Chevrolet Cruze
- GMC Acadia
It’s the most of any other manufacturer or brand this time around, giving GM a real shot at taking home the significant honor. However, GM is missing from the truck category. Ford, Honda and Nissan took the semifinalist spots for truck of the year, leaving the Silverado, Colorado, Sierra and Canyon out of the running.
Now jurors will evaluate each semfinalist for their respective categories before voting a winner. The winners will be announced at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in January. The entire list of contenders can be found right here.

Of all the candidates, I see the Buicks in the final list, and one as the winner.
Maybe LaCrosse–Cascada is to heavy is Envision it’s only available in certain trims with less than ideal for and finish. I’d love seeing Lacrosse take down Cadillac.
I agree with Steve C. The European designed Cascada convertible has been derided for it’s sluggishness, and I can’t see the made-in-China Envision SUV/crossover winning.
The Lacrosse looks like a more elegant and improved version of the Impala, is it possibly better than the XTS as well? The XTS has a bigger trunk, it’s longer than the Lacrosse but has a shorter wheelbase. Probably the Cadillac interior is nicer and it has a more luxury “badge”, but I think the Lacrosse may push Cadillac to try harder. Or maybe it’s part of GMs master plan to phase out plush riding FWD Cadillacs by pushing customers to the Lacrosse, so that Caddy can just be a “RWD luxury sports car” company and leave the “comfortable riding luxury” to Buick, Lincoln, and Lexus?
Competition may come from Lincoln Continental, but if price is a factor then the Lacrosse should beat it. The Volvo S90 seems to be a great car in a lot of ways, but the style is a little “chunky” to me in the front and rear. I’d rather have a V90, the station wagon version of the S90, more utility and looks better to my eyes too – they should have entered the V90. I don’t see the Cadillac CT6 as a winner. Ride is too hard for a car in that size/class – a negative for all Cadillac sedans in recent years, IMO.
Winner could be the Bolt though, if the judges lean “green”. Bolt is supposedly the best small electric car ever, especially when the cost is factored in. Good going GM on many of its brands in recent years, especially Buick and Chevy.
I believe there are no new trucks this year so not eligible.
Bolt EV is going to be car of the year.
Yes none of the trucks were new this year. The new Diesels are coming too late to qualify.
The only one I see making it is the Bolt. Maybe the ct6 because of its structural innovation or the Cruze because it’s the best compact car GM has ever produced. As for truck of the year I don’t see any finalists. IMO truck of the year will be the Honda Ridgeline
Bolt or Pacifica will win. Surprised the much mocked Cascada made the list. Glad to see Jaguar XE make the list.
IMO the Bolt EV takes the top spot , with the CT6 coming in 2nd place . Ford’s F-250 XL Super Duty for TOTY .
What about Regal and Verano????
Regal and verano won’t be because they’re older products
I feel like either the bolt or the Prius prime for coty and then f250 for toty
For car of the year, I would like the Continental or the LaCrosse, for utility the Pacifica, and for truck the Ridgeline.
Lacrosse all the way!
The Bolt and Ridgeline will win as they are the ones that have the most influence of change in the market.
This has always been a contest that favors the agents of change.
My 2010 CTS is in for routine oil and fluid changes and I was given the 2017 to drive. I was really impressed with this auto. I like it and if I had the money, I would definitely buy one.
