We Hear: 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Production To Remain In Canada

Following Unifor and General Motors’ new four-year labor agreement, it was good news for Canadian manufacturing. Along with the news of $520 million worth of investment into Canadian plants, Chevrolet higher-ups also told us the 2018 Equinox would be sticking to its production home up north.
We asked where the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox would be produced for the United States, and the CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada was the solid answer we received during the 2018 Equinox unveiling last week. The facility received a $250 million investment for future vehicle production back in 2013.
Currently, CAMI builds the outgoing Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. If demand is there, GM could utilize one of its Mexican facilities for increased 2018 Equinox capacity, according to officials.
The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is slated to launch as early as Spring 2017.
Perfect fit to assemble the Equinox Limited in the consolidated plant in Oshawa, ON
Yes there is more to come with the SUV.
Interesting how the Nox was announced as soon as the deal was made with the union. It appears they may have been holding up the intro till they got the deal made?
They will need extra production as like they have with the last.
I wonder how long till we see the Terrain now.
I often wonder if GM built cars in Canada because of the single payer health care system got GM out of the health care business there. now the union here in the states is in charge of the health care there is no advantage of GM to build cars in Canada
Canada has a highly educated work force, producing consistently as one of the highest quality plant of all GM brands.
But, Mexican labour under $5 an hour is hard to resist even if the quality isn’t there and workers leave when they can get 25 cents higher somewhere else.
The original reason they went to Canada was to beat the MPG deal.
All MFG went to Canada to build the larger cars and most V8 cars years ago as they could count them as imports and the MPG was counted against the cars coming from Asia they imported.
The rules changes but they already had plants there and so for most they kept them open since they were invested.
As for work force there really is little advantage anywhere anymore. With the way the lines are set up any country can build quality cars.
The processes and investment into new plants have standardized the process and the same car can be built in the same plant to the same standard.
Almost all the bolts are now torqued to spec and a computer records the torque levels. lasers measure aliments. cameras check for missing parts and finish conditions.
The myth of highly educated and quality belonging to a region or group is no longer in play.
The greatest gap in quality is often a part from a supplier that may not be up to spec that is not detected.
People assume Mexico and China can not build quality cars and in the end get their lunch taken and they eat it to right in front of them.
What happened to the manufacturing in Spring Hill?
It seems that was essentially replaced by the new 2017 GMC Acadia. Spring Hill hasn’t made Equinoxes in about a year (I assume to prep for the new Acadia).

My question is now that there is more room at the Oshawa plant will they move more production there or will they still do the Ingersoll and continue to land train the bodies to Oshawa for final assembly?
This was a far from ideal process but it worked as sales increased and more production was needed.
Never buy GM …ESPECIALLY EQUINOX …MY 5 YR Old EQUINOX MOTOR WENT AND THE TRANSMISSION ! …..Never Gm again …bought Nissan New …they sold my 5 yr old equinox to a “JUNK DEALER” only got $3,000 for it
Same happened to me 5 yr old equinox needed whole upper motor replaced then 6 months later transmission went . had to get rid of it and hadn’t even finished paying it off ..got 1500 for it only. NEVER BUY GM THERE CARS ARE GARBAGE . and I have never owned anything but GM MY WHOLE LIFE ….Never again!!!!!
My 2010 Terrain had 112000 miles when I traded for another 2016. Both V6’s loaded. Never a problem with anything except wiper blades. Still had original brakes with plenty of pad left.
I own a 2008 Equinox with 90,000 miles on it. A broken fan blade the only repair done. I also own a 2015 Equinox. Rides better than ANY compact suv i’ve ridden in. The 2018 Equinox, with the shorter wheelbase, will probably ride choppy. Like CRV, Rogue, Rav4, and Escape.
Yes I have a 2018 equinox and love it but one thing why is it that it’s not a way to put a locked gas cap on the capless tank…that’s not safe because you got to many thieves stealing gas and evil people putting stuff in your gas tank…..thank you and what can I do
