Previously, Car and Driver took the time to highlight 10 years of Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911 at its iconic Lightning Lap test. Today, though, it’s all about Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.
Since Lightning Lap’s inception in 2006, Camaro and Mustang have been well represented. We’ve seen GT500s, 1LEs, ZL1s, Boss 302s and more go at it to claim the fastest time around Virginia International Raceway.
While the news that the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE is only three seconds behind the GT350R is big, it’s the fact that the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 has yet to be dethroned by any Mustang variant.
Even with the GT350R’s time of 2:51.8, it wasn’t enough to knock the Z/28’s 2:50.9, nearly a full second faster than the latest pony from Shelby and Ford.
It’s only heating up, too. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will soon arrive on the scene, and you know the Camaro team is cooking up a ballistic missile that is the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.
