The GM Authority Take

The nationwide availability of the 2017 Chevy Volt is the direct result of this sharp sales spike. By comparison, the 2016 Volt that introduced the all-new, second-generation model was limited to a handful of states. As such, the 2017 model’s widespread availability coupled with the desirability of the all-new, second-gen Volt are likely the primary reasons for the impressive sales growth.

  1. Chevy Volt Sales Up 83 Percent To 2,406 Units In July 2016 as this says people are finally understanding what the Volt is no different than an electric vehicle if the commute is under 43-45 miles where not a drop of gas is used.

  2. I think that this has more to do with the styling as they built car that actually looks good and priced it better.

I think people understood the last car but the styling while not bad could have been better and the prices were not good out the gate.

The Cruze could look better with more Volt Styling. While close the Cruze looks much better on the road. Also the interior is very nice.

    1. Scot — the styling is definitely playing into it, as the second-gen is actually a great-looking vehicle, while I would describe the first-gen as “ok” in the styling department. That’s what I mean by “desirability of the all-new, second-gen Volt” in the article.

  3. I think this speaks well for the continuing support that GM has given this technology. Current gas prices are low (ask my friends in Amsterdam, NL about gas prices…), but as we all should remember, that can change overnight.

    1. I can’t remember exactly when this happened, but it was during Bill Clinton’s presidency. I think it was during his re-election bid. Gas prices SPIKED beyond the pale.

Clinton went to a mic and said he didn’t understand why prices had shot up considering there was plenty of oil at the time. He warned he’d look into the oil’s companies doings to unravel this mystery.

Three weeks later gas prices dropped. And stayed dropped for a lone time.

  4. Oil is a traded commodity and many global economies are based on it.

They know what causes the price changes but many in the public have little understanding of it.

Many will still tell you we are on the gold standard.

  5. The only negative I can find with this car is that it’s really a 4-seater. Sure, you can sit five in a pinch but it would be very uncomfortable. Other than that, I would say this is one of the best all around vehicles on the market today. I agree with some that said it was over engineered, and it’s nice to see that Chevrolet went over and beyond consumer expectations. People recognize it as such and are buying them even when gas prices are very low. It bodes well for the future of Volt.

  6. this car is ridiculously slab-sided.

  7. I sat in a Volt at an auto show and found that my head is directly below the rear window. I want to know… is that normal in a coupe or sedan? (I’ve only owned small SUVs thus far). Aside from the practically 4-seater nature of the Volt, it is the thing that makes me think it isn’t a good buy.
