The GM Authority Take
The Traverse is finding new homes very quickly, an interesting development given that the current, first-generation model is entering its last stretch for the 2017 model year. What’s likely directly responsible for the model’s sales jump is North America’s voracious hunger for crossover utility vehicles, and the Traverse fits that bill perfectly. Plus, the full-size CUV also has some attractive incentives (as of August 22, 2016):
2016 Chevrolet Traverse Offers

- 16% cash back off MSRP on select remaining 2016 models in stock

I wonder if the chevy is reaping the benefits of the 30% drop in sales of the GMC Acadia , as the vehicle has just been downsized and has limited availability?? maybe the new Acadia is getting defectors ?
Could be so… we’ve gotten a fair share of letters from first-gen Acadia owners complaining about the down-sizing of the second-generation model.
If what you describe is indeed happening, then it kind of puts a dent into the notion that GMC customers wouldn’t cross-shop a Chevy.
The only appeal GMC had to me personally over Chevrolet was called Denali. Until GM decided they needed to either cut GMC or give it a reason to exist (Why Denali came to be in the 90’s), GMC was always the Chevrolet with a different grille. Sometimes it was a nicer looking grille (like the 900’s front end IMO), but usually I preferred Chevrolet’s. Really, I thought Chevrolet should have just offered more grille options like Ford does. Now that the Chevrolet’s Denali (High Country) is available in black, it’s a wash. As a Chevrolet man at heart, I’m beyond thrilled that Chevrolet is finally getting some green lights from corporate to go all out on something other than a Corvette. I’m hoping AWD cars are in the works as well as more available options. Like on the trucks, I’d really like Auto 4×4.
Concerning the Traverse, Chevrolet needs higher end trims… Like a Premiere in black.
They cross shop for sure as I have.
As for the Acadia I expect a larger model at some point as they are just shifting things around.
Lets also not forget there are still some of the large Acadia models still around and at very good prices right now too. If I wanted a GMC now is prime time to buy the older model. At least it has been.
It looks like people still like the bigger CUV . The Chevy is a bargain for what you get and maybe folks are buying these before the smaller ones show up . There is still the Acadia Limited that will be built for a short time .
For sure there is cross shopping going on consumers aren’t dumb , I hope it doesn’t mean that the new Acadia is going to suffer in sales now that its smaller . Its a good CUV as long as you don’t need that third row for anything but small kids .
If these sales numbers continue GM may adjust the availability of the Acadia limited or push back the new Traverse , they are making a decent profit on these old platforms .
