In the continuation of Canadian union labor talks, Unifor national president Jerry Dias stated Ford and Fiat-Chrysler are much more committed to Canadian manufacturing than General Motors. Specifically, he stated Ford and FCA understood investment would be necessary for a deal, according to Our Windsor.
“Though we have similar challenges with both Ford and Fiat Chrysler, they understand investment decisions are going to be part of 2016 negotiations,” Dias said at a news conference after meeting with Ford and FCA officials.
Noting each American auto manufacturer’s sizable investments into the U.S., he said Unifor is expecting “expecting nothing less in Canada.” The union’s largest priorities are securing a new product line at the GM Oshawa assembly, investment in Ford’s Windsor engine plant and additional investments for upgrades at FCA’s assembly in Brampton.
As for GM specifically, the automaker has remained reluctant to commit to any additional vehicle production until a labor contract is signed. Dias stated GM will have to make an investment of the like if any deal is to be signed.
“GM will change their position during this set of negotiations, the only question is when” Dias said. “We are determined we are going to find long-term solutions for our Oshawa operations.”
Unifor stated it will announce a target company the Tuesday following Labor Day, or the automaker it feels it can work the best deal with to mirror the other two automakers’ deals.

Unions are an outdated idea and do nothing for the progress of the company they “represent”.

The CAW needs to learn to work with GM and not to try to bully their way in. They need GM more than GM needs them.

No one cares about the big auto unions anymore in Canada. Their time has come and gone…They are dinosaurs. Only a certain someone writing every article for this site seems to give a damn.
