Cadillac Racing’s Michael Cooper sits third in Pirelli World Challenge GT standings as the series prepares to head to Utah Motorsports Park for Rounds 16 and 17 of the 2016 season.
Cooper will attempt to close the 101 point gap to first place’s Alvaro Parente in this weekend’s double header. Teammate Johnny O’Connell, who sits fourth, is also keen to close the gap to the championship leader as he looks to win his fifth PWC championship.
“With the electrical issues at road America and the cut tire at Lime Rock we’ve had more issues take points away from us than the other guys,” O’Connell said. “You can count on me to push hard and hope they suffer through a little bad luck. If they do, we’re right back in it. We’ll fight for that fifth championship all the way to Laguna.”
Both O’Connell and Cooper have won races at the 3.04-mile, 14-turn Utah circuit, with O’Connell taking back-to-back wins there in last year in the Cadillac ATS-V.R. Cooper made his GTS debut at the course in 2014 and won a race in GTS there last year before he had joined the Cadillac Racing team.
“The track has always been one of the nicest facilities that we visit,” Cooper said. “I’m even more excited to get back to Tooele and see what kind of updates have been made since the new ownership took over. The goal this weekend, pass everybody and win some more races. I don’t see why we can’t do that this weekend.”
