Cadillac Facing Slowed Investment, Some Future Products May Be Cut

Despite Cadillac’s splash at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with its Escala concept vehicle, it may not be the signifier we desperately want it to be: an inbound flagship sedan.
According to a recent report by The Detroit Bureau, Cadillac is facing minor investment setbacks by parent General Motors. The brand is reportedly being squeezed to bring forth a leaner portfolio than once imagined by President Johan de Nyscchen, per sources close to the brand’s product planning. That includes the off again, on again flagship sedan referred to as the Cadillac CT8.
de Nysschen wouldn’t comment on specifics during the Escala concept’s reveal, but he did state the twin-turbo V8 engine may be pushed back until the next-generation Cadillac CT6. That could peg the engine to debut sometime in 2023.
While crossovers and SUVs will remain on the table, the cuts to product planning will be on the passenger cars side of things, per the insiders. That means a flagship sedan and “a broader and more tempting portfolio” to take on European rivals is looking dim at current.
“There is a tremendous amount of pressure to get volumes up” before more money is invested in new product said analyst Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting.
It’s not to say GM is finished investing in Cadillac, but it is not doing so as extensively when de Nysschen was first brought on board. At that time, $12 billion was earmarked for Cadillac’s global expansion.

it would make more sense if the wait till after the next generation CT6 and next generation Omega platform to build the CT8…if they build it on the current Omega platforms I’m afraid the CT8 will look more of the same…..just a further stretched CTS.
Interesting that the financial sabre-rattling comes not long after the (lukewarm) reception of the Escala reveal in Pebble Beach.
So dealers are unhappy, mgt is impatient, and the ‘millennial brand’ reveals to middle-agers from Pebble and Carmel? Why not NY?? Your HQ. The media capital?
Most of us don’t have enough transparency, but from the looks of things, I’d be shorting Cadillac for the time being.
This is like that expensive fighter-jet project that’s way over budget, and 10-years overdue. I’d be tightening the leash, too.
I like much American cars; I have always like them; and this is the same as always happens in the history of the cars in your country.
The eternal fight of the car we want to sell vs. the car we have to sell.
You have to sell the car the buyer wants and needs; with your style your design and your values; Cadillac, but the car buyer asks you; not that you would want to sell.
The market (buyers) looking CUV’s and compact cars, not much power and good fuel economy.
You offer those cars Cadillac, times have changed, people and society too, and cars have to change, and the soul of the brands remain
Some of you guys are worse than knick fans. ( I can only say that because I am one) loyal but always looking for Someone to blame.
Cadillac should be focused on market demand more, and it appears that this is what they’re doing. I’m sure they’re aware of the high demand for CUVs and SUVs, and we should expect these to hit the showroom floors in the near future. As some are pointing out, it’s the volume sellers that fund the expensive and exclusive products; not the other way around! I don’t mind a relatively small lineup for the Cadillac brand, as long as they invest heavily in addressing the weak aspects of their current products! As much as we want to see a true flagship Cadillac, I think it’s more important make the next ATS, CTS and CT6 sedans more refined and competitive with the leaders of the segment! Then bring in some competitive and desirable CUV/SUV models!
Before JDN commented with a response, most everyone has a hissy-fit over a story that is halfway true. This thread is just too funny.
That Cadillac Escala is incredible. If Cadillac built it on the CTS platform it would be a run away success !!!
