Finally, The Complete Changes, Updates & New Features For The 2017 Chevy Colorado

Just yesterday, Chevy announced that the 2017 Colorado will receive an all-new 3.6L V-6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. And now, we’ve gotten our hands on the complete order guide for the vehicle, filling us in on the remaining changes and updates. So, let’s dive right in.

Exterior

On the outside, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado replaces two existing colors with four new ones:

Deleted Colors

  • Red Rock Metallic
  • Inferno Orange Metallic

New Colors

  • Graphite Metallic
  • Cajun Red Tintcoat
  • Laser Blue (mid-model year availability)
  • Orange Burst Metallic (mid-model year availability)

But that’s not all, as there are many more changes to the exterior.

Exterior deletions:

  • Body-color luxury package
  • Midnight Edition (for the LT trim level); the Z71 Midnight Edition remains available
  • Z71 Trail Boss
  • Bed Protection Package (LPO)
  • Exterior Convenience Package (LPO)
  • Bed net (LPO)
  • Metal bed storage box (LPO)
  • Utility rack load stops (LPO)
  • 18-inch 5-spoke aluminum wheels (LPO, SE4)

New exterior features:

  • Custom Special Edition for the Work Truck trim level that includes the following equipment:
    • Body-color grille
    • Body-color door handles
    • Outside power-adjustable, body-color, manual-folding mirrors
    • Body-color rear bumper
    • 18″ Dark Argent Metallic cast aluminum wheels
  • Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 7″ diagonal color touch-screen
  • Front Fog Lamp Kit (LPO, available on WT)
  • Cargo divider (LPO, available on all trims except Base/2SA)
  • Low-gloss Black Stripe Package that includes stripes on the hood and tailgate (LPO, available on all trims except Base/2SA)

That’s right, the 2017 model year of the midsize truck no longer offers the Colorado Midnight Edition or the Colorado Z71 Trail Boss models (thankfully, the Z71 Midnight Edition remains). Lastly, contents of the Colorado Chrome Appearance Package Plus (PDY) will now be included with Chrome Appearance Package (PDZ), with the Chrome Appearance Package Plus (PDY) being discontinued.

Interior

On the inside, the 2017 Colorado makes heated front cloth seats available as a free flow option on the LT trim level. In addition, the 4.2-inch IO4 MyLink radio is deleted, while the 7-inch diagonal Color Touchscreen MyLink radio IOB is introduced, with Teen Driver Mode becoming standard on all 2017 Colorado models.

And finally, the LPO-level protective rear seat cover becomes available on LT and Z71 Crew Cab models; it was not available on LT and Z71 in the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado.

Powertrain

In the powertrain department, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado replaces the last-generation 3.6L V-6 LFX gasoline engine with the all-new 3.6L V-6 LGZ motor. Representing the second generation of GM’s dual overhead cam V-6 engines, the LGZ makes three more horsepower and six pound-feet more torque. But the biggest difference is that the LGZ features Active Fuel Management (Cylinder Deactivation) as well as notable refinements to the direct injection system. It is paired exclusively to the new 8L45 8-speed automatic M5T transmission.

The new V-6 and 8-speed are available on the WT, LT, and Z71 trim levels, as follows:

2017 Chevrolet Colorado - New Engine And Transmission Availability
Trim Level Base Work Truck LT Z71
Feature / Equipment Group 2SA 2WT 4WT 2LT 4LT 27Z 47Z
3.6L V-6 LGZ engine Not Available A1 A2 A1 A2 A1 A2
8-Speed 8L45 M5T transmission Not Available A3 A4 A5 A4 A5 A4

Legend:

  • A1: Standard on Crew Cab Long Box models.
  • A2: Standard on Crew Cab models.
  • A3: Requires (LGZ) 3.6L DI DOHC V6 engine. Standard on Crew Cab Long Box models.
  • A4: Requires (LGZ) 3.6L DI DOHC V6 engine. Standard on Crew Cab models. Available on Extended Cab models.
  • A5: Requires (LGZ) 3.6L DI DOHC V6 engine. Standard on Crew Cab Long Box models. Available on Extended Cab models.

The Colorado’s two other engines — the 2.5L I-4 LCV and 2.8L I-4 LWN Duramax Turbo-Diesel remain paired to the 6L50 6-speed automatic MYB transmission. The 6-speed manual M5T remains standard on the Base trim level as well as on the 2WD Work Truck (WT) with the Extended Cab and 2.5L I-4 engine.

The 2017 Chevy Colorado also adds the AutoTrac transfer case standard on 4WD models with gas engines, excluding WT trim level. What’s more, the trailer brake controller is now available with the new 3.6L V-6 LGZ engine and Z82 Trailering Package.

Rounding out the 2017 model’s powertrain changes is the deletion of the Performance Air Intake System as well as the Performance Intake and Exhaust Package. Both LPO-level items were calibrated for the outgoing 3.6L V-6 LFX engine.

And that does it for the official 2017 Chevy Colorado updates and changes which, by the way, are similar to those found on the 2017 GMC Canyon. Alas, we did not get some of what we were hoping for the 2017 MY, but there’s always the possibility that some of those will come next year in the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. In addition, we would not discount information on the 2017 Colorado ZR2 being released separately in the near-term future.

  1. The midnight edition is a good looking truck, can’t believe they are discontinued it already.

Looking forward to seeing the laser blue, curious to how close it will be to the blue on the trail boss?

    Reply
    1. There will likely be a new limited edition for 2017 comparable to the Midnight. New name, similar appearance package.
Trailboss will likely just fold into the ZR2, then ZR2 parts will be available as options to the lower trim levels.

      1. I hope they make a trail boss version

  2. Trail Boss leaves to make room for ZR2? I’m guessing that’s the reason.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the laser blue color.Red and orange are replaced with better/deeper same colors.

What I would love Chevy to do is add manual to all engines. It’s such an inexpensive option, it should be offered on all trucks and engines.

  3. They have messed up something on the press release because you can get Laser Blue already….it was a late color availability on the 15’s and you could get it on all the 16’s.

    Good looking color though !

Hate to see Red Rock Metallic go, that was a sharp color.

They need to offer a power sliding back window and drop the manual one !

  4. The ZR2 is the only model of the Colorado I would consider buying. So until that model comes in I will be driving something else.

  5. Midnight edition is not discontinued, check the order guide…

    1. Clarification: the Midnight Edition is discontinued on the LT trim level. It remains available on the Z71 trim level.

  6. Can you get leather interior?

  7. Release date is 4th quarter of 2016? Wow, thanks for the info!

    1. You can order the 2017 models at your dealers now. I was planning on ordering a 2016 but, as it turns out it’s actually a 2017.

  8. I would love to get a Diesel. Sadly, I am a stickler on the manual transmission. Not for the usual reasons (economy, rarity, etc.), but because they’re just more engaging/fun to drive, especially with ADHD. Which is depressing that the pair isn’t mated. I wonder who’s tree I gotta shake to get that.

    1. I love the looks of this Colorado, didn’t want a fullsize, didn’t want a mini, went to the Chevy dealership to buy a 2016 Colorado, I was gonna get a 4×4 6cyl WT with a manual transmission but to my disappointment the only option with a manual trans was a 4cyl 4×2 basic WT. I took a 4 popper 2 wheel drive Colorado manual transmission for a test drive (WHAT A DOG). Not much you can do with this truck, can’t pull a boat, can’t pull a flat bed, can’t drive off road, Thanks for nothing Chevy! But then again Thanks for saving me $30k

  9. I would love to see a v8 with a 6 speed manual trans.

    1. I so agree, even a manual in the 3.6 would be so great, but a v8 is even better. Give us mid size folks something to bring to the stoplight with a big smile. Great towing with a v8 in a 4×4 with a manual trans would be the best for these trucks. Stressing a 3.6 to tow with is pointless when y’all can just give us the v8 we deserve. You will totally kill Frontier and Tacoma even further by giving the people these options. You already got the best looks inside and out. Great design, great features, just go all the way with it. You will have the best truck on the market! Your close as it is.

  10. Still no sunroof or power rear slider…bummer.

  11. I hope GM widens and lengthens the front seats in the 2018 model. Consumer Reports’ review was dead on correct about this in this. I have a Canyon SLT with leather. The seat bottoms have seams atop the bolsters that dig into my thighs, which is very uncomfortable. They also need to get rid of the roll padding at the end of the seat bottom. GM could re-design the console and door panels to accommodate wider seats as other manufacturers (e.g. Hyundai) do. I think that would make the twins near perfect mid-sized trucks.

    1. But please don’t go cheap like the Frontier with all plastic. Make it presentable with nice colors and stitching and high quality carpet and fabrics and such. I love the truck as it is, but respect everyone who has already bought into one and cares enough to rate it. Improve it by going fowards, don’t cut corners and go cheap. You want to see cheap, open the door of a 2017 Nissan Frontier pro4x, top of the line mid size, but all plastic. Please GM make consumers happy with what they ask for, but make us proud with detail. PLEASE- DONT take the mid size beautiful design you have and destroy it like Tacoma has done with that ugly 18 wheeler style wide and tall grill across the front of your beautiful truck!!! Y’all are better than that! Tacoma needs a different designer, but then again, that’s more $ for us Colorado Z71 lovers if y’all keep up the good work and they keep getting ugly by the years as all your competition has done!!

  13. What’s wrong with a regular cab folks. They sell compact cars just not compact trucks. Maybe a regular cab LUV truck edition?

Cool customizable trucks could be a hit with entry level and would help with cafe standards

  14. I would certainly love to get a Diesel. Regretfully, I am a stickler on the manual transmission. Except the usual factors (economy, rarity, etc.), but because they’re simply more engaging/fun to own, specifically with ADHD. Which is dispiriting that the pair isn’t mated. I question who’s tree I obtained ta shake to obtain that.

  15. Does the diesel motor on the Colorado get that much better mileage? Also is it that much slower?

  16. Still no 6 speed manual in the Z71 extended cab or crew cab with the 3.6 V6. It’s terrible that those who prefer the manual trans don’t get that option. It’s the only thing that’s keeping me from ordering the truck. I’m so impressed with it. I’m 37 years old and I still prefer a manual shift. I bet if y’all change this you will sell more!
