There is a small but important detail in the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 order guide: the new 10-speed automatic transmission will not be ready in time for the launch of the 2017 ZL1. Rather, the self-shifting 10-speed will arrive for the 2017 interim model year (2017i), leaving the six-speed manual as the only transmission for the supercar’s launch.
Codeveloped with the Ford Motor Company for rear-wheel-drive vehicle applications, the gearbox is the first 10-speed automatic transmission for a volume production car. It was engineered to transfer power and torque with quick shifts while maintaining more engine power after each shift.
In the 2017 Camaro ZL1, the GM 10-speed automatic transmission is assigned GM RPO code MX0 and includes an oil cooler and remote start.
For its part, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rides on GM’s acclaimed Alpha platform and features the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 LT4 Small Block engine under the hood making 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. All other systems and components, including brakes, suspension, interior, and exterior, are upgraded for the ultimate performance driving experience, resulting in what is expected to be the fastest production Camaro ZL1 ever.

Anyone know if the 10spd auto will be available in future SS models? I suspect “yes” but not quite sure.
yes but not right away. I think both GM and Ford are only using it lower volume vehicles first to basically weed out early production issues and perfect the transmission before pushing it on the masses. they are doing the same with the 9 speed I believe which is why only the the top trim Malibu is getting it, but im also not 100% sure if all this is true, I read it somewhere not too long ago though.
At some point, yes. But not for the 2017 model year, that’s for sure maybe for the mid cycle refresh of the sixth gen Camaro… that would be my expectation.
This is quite a big setback if you ask me. Sales are going to be low even for a low volume variant, until the automatic is available. Someone goofed this up.
I am disappointed on the delay ,I had bet a Ford guy on gminsidenews forum ,that the Chevy would be first to offer the 10 speed and beat Ford ,Well looks like i loose .
As usual Gm is going to be late to the party. Ford will undoubtedly have the new 10 speed I their Shelby to beat the new ZL1. Wake up gm
And yet, we still don’t know who will actually be first to have a real shipping car with the 10-speed gearbox. And then there is the quality factor to consider – who will have this thing tuned perfectly so it doesn’t blow in the first 150 miles, or during the first day at the track.
And ultimately, does it matter who is “first”, even if it is by a few months or even a year? Ford was first to mass produce vehicles… and GM was way behind. Somehow, GM sells more cars than Ford does 100 years later.
The order guide does not say or confirm what this article is saying, editors need a tighter leash on their writers.
The order guide says interim availability.
Translation: 2017i, which typically means mid-model year.
Mid model year for 2017 as a whole or the just ZL1 because the ZL1 will not hit lots until 2017i as you say….nothing in the order guide says one way or the other, people own 2017 MY Camaros already and it can be interpreted that the ZL1 launches as 2017i and that the 10speed would be available….
Ah, I see what you are saying. However, I don’t think that it’s the case.
My reasoning: though the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will be launched mid-model year (at the end of calendar year 2016), GM is considering its launch to be for the “regular” 2017 model year. This can be evidenced by all references to the ZL1 in the order guide being for “2017” rather than “2017 interim”.
For example, the custom launch control (XLC) does not have an interim footnote next to it, despite being exclusive to the ZL1. The same goes for all other ZL1-specific features: none of them have a footnote like the 10-speed auto stating 2017 interim availability. In fact, the 10-speed auto and the carbon fiber instrument panel molding trim are the only two ZL1-exclusive features that have the 2017 interim availability footnote.
So, if GM were considering the ZL1 launch to be for the interim model year, every single ZL1 feature and option would be footnoted as “interim availability”. That is not the case for any ZL1-specific feature except for the 10-speed auto (and the carbon fiber IP trim).
Ah I see now, I’ll be hoping that it is available sooner rather than later. Longer wait just means bigger down payment!
Yup, exactly!
Also: we have reached out to Chevrolet for official comment on this. Will update the article if/when we hear back, and I’ll also follow up in the comments here.
