General Motors is long credited with creating the first design department within the automotive industry, after Harley Earl spearheaded the General Motors Art and Color Department in 1927.
Decades later, GM design has flourished into a global network of designers and creative minds, most recently headed by Ed Welburn. On the eve of Welburn’s retirement from the coveted position, Autoline sat down the man himself John Cafaro, Executive Director, Global Chevrolet Design and Helen Emsley, Executive Director, Global GMC Design and User Experience.
The three discuss the heritage of GM design, and how it affects the automaker and present, and how it will shape the future of global design, too.
To help push the point home, Welburn also personally selected the vehicles to be showcased in the background of the episode, which includes the most recent Buick Avista, last year’s Buick Avenir, the Cadillac Elmiraj and a few other vintage design pieces.
We won’t spoil the episode, so grab a seat and settle in for the discussion after pressing play right up above.
