Denali Trim Accounted For Nearly Half Of GMC Sierra HD Retail Sales In May 2016

When GM’s GMC brand released the very first photos of the 2017 Sierra HD back in June, it also slipped in an intriguing statistic: the Sierra Denali HD accounted for 48 percent of the brand’s Heavy Duty retail sales in May.
The GM Authority Take
The data point is intriguing given that General Motors and its individual vehicle brands typically doesn’t break out sales of its full-trucks by trim level or light vs. heavy duty ratings.
Though interesting, the statistic doesn’t help in determining how many actual units of the Sierra Heavy Duty or Sierra Denali HD were delivered during the month out of the 17,642 cumulative GMC Sierra sales.
A few years ago it was reported that in North America, GMC sells more Denali specific models than all of Jag, Land Rover and Porsche combined. It is likely still close to today, Porsche sales are way up with the intro of the Cajun and Panamera, and JLR are clawing their market share. But GMC has more models featuring the Denali trim now too.
The thing with the Denali is you really don’t get much for the price you pay over the SLT2.
But that is ok as it means that GMC is making a ton of money off of these as it cost so little to add some extra trim and lights.
As long as people are willing to pay more God bless the Denali.
I would like to see them add an extra engine package or AWD package not available on the SLT2 or any Chevy to just sweeten the package a little more than just trim.
The power of the badge, GMC has done a great job marketing the Denali trim as a bit of a standalone division within a division. As Scott said you really don’t get much mechanical upgrades mostly cosmetic.
Denali seems to be a huge cash cow for GM
Impressive. Hopefully they add the new front fascia to the HDs.
It’s impressive how much a premium the Denali brand commands, but GMC needs to be careful to nurture the sub-brand by giving it nicer interiors with sumptuous leather, thick-pile carpeting, soft-touch materials, real wood and aluminum trim, infontainment technology, autonomous safety features, more powerful engines, and other exclusive features to help the Denali brand stand out and justify its hefty price tags.
I find it ridiculous that the current GMC Terrain Denali did not get Xenon headlamps, LED tail-lamps, LED foglamps, better wheel designs, and nicer interiors to justify its higher branding. It simply looks like a sticker/appearance package with not much of a difference over an SLT-Plus model.
C’mon GMC – step up your game or you’ll be left in the dust by cross-town rivals Ford with its Platinum trim, Ram with its Longhorn trim, Jeep with its Overland and Summit trims, and so forth.
I can’t believe GMC would make ANY vehicle without premium headlights and ALL LED lights!!
You are all talking GMC as it refers to Denali but there is a problem with Chevy Trucks. The Colorado is still pretty cheap looking inside and out … Silverado LTZ is good but could be better. I would like a little different body style on the Colorado and Canyons.. more like the Silverado and GMC but scaled down.
The LTZ is in line with the GMC SLT and F150 King Ranch. Silverado High Country and Sierra Denali are in line with the F150 Limited and more so Platinum.
When you say the LTZ could be better, that’s where the High Country comes in.
Now if only the same bright folks behind Denail could get Cadillac into the right groove…
