The GM Authority Take

A 70 percent jump for a record-setting June sales performance is quite impressive for the small Spark. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the sales jump comes during a time when car buyers can’t seem to satisfy their feverish hunger for crossovers, while the Spark is anything but.

Several dealer sources told GM Authority that they attribute the increase in Spark sales to increased customer interest in the 2016 Chevy Spark, which is all-new for the 2016 model year. The model is also Chevrolet’s least expensive vehicle, carrying a starting price of just $12,660.

Whether Chevy’s June 20 percent discount had a positive impact on Spark sales last month is unknown, though it’s worth noting that the promotion was limited to the Spark 2LT — its top-most trim level that has a starting price of $16,185 for the manual and $17,285 for the automatic.

  1. If this isn’t any more obvious that we’re headed toward another crisis with people off loading their soon to be upside down SUVs… Gas prices spiked the last month, I was paying 2.65 for a while there, and what do you know… a compact car has a sales spike.

  2. Gas prices “spiked” last month like they do every year this time for the July 4th holiday season. Overall though our prices have been falling and continue to. Its too bad GM doesn’t offer the 1.0L 3 cylinder turbo in the Spark so it could get even better MPG than its NA 1.4L. .

    1. Nope. Naturally-aspirated all the way. A 2016 1.4 4-banger with a choose-your-own-adventure gearbox is the way to go. I can say from experience.

  3. “It’s the gas prices stupid”
Why the mean Title? And it really is not as obvious as you state. SUVs are the only vehicles consistently selling and the Industry is gearing to make more. The fact that people are upside down in auto loans has more to do with how easy it is to get into loans these days for minimal down and forever payment plans. Many cars loans (even small cars) are this way. I think you are the one that needs to learn something, at the very least, respect and manners. This is not some political forum. The authors and readers conduct themselves very well here. I suggest you seize the berating.

    2. Who is James Carville? That reference flew right over your head. And whoever finds a handle with the objective noun of ‘stupid’ offensive must be tighter than two coats of paint.

  4. I like the new ’17 model. The older model had that Asian look to it, this model … you can really identify it as a Chevrolet.
