Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Spotted Desert Weather Testing

We’re approaching two years since Chevrolet wowed us with the Colorado ZR2 concept, previewing a rugged, off-road Colorado. Since then, we have gotten the Colorado Z71 Trail Boss. Even so, the Colorado ZR2 is the real deal.
When we think back to it, the ZR2 concept showcased everything needed to take the midsize truck off the beaten path, including higher ground clearance, reworked front bumper and shocks built to handle the off-road abuse. We’d say two years is long enough, because these spy shots over at Autoblog of the Colorado ZR2 have the truck looking nearly ready for production.
Minimal camouflage hides the front fascia, which has kept the off-road-inspired front bumper and ground clearance a priority. It also looks like a skidplate and tow hooks are present to keep the ZR2 out of harm’s way.
General Motors has stated it would rather chase a midsize off-roader than an F-150 Raptor fighter, and we’re okay with that, as long as the production version of the Colorado ZR2 delivers. And in that regard, it looks like it won’t be skimping out.
So, dear 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 — we are so ready for you!
Unfortunately, it’s still likely going to be a soft-roader
It will be very able off roader but do not expect a Raptor.
The key here is cost. It will not be cheap as it is. If you drive the cost up too much it will conflict with the full size. we are close now.
Outfitting this truck and keeping the price where it needs to be is a real challenge.
The 2017 F-150 Raptor and this truck are not in the same “zip code”, but ultimately they will be compared because GM refuses to build a proper competitive answer to the Raptor. They could and would probably make a lot of money doing it, but instead they go the “cheap” route. Problem is, the ZR2 will not be cheap. Loaded Colorado’s with the diesel already go over the $40K mark, so expect pricing north of $40K for one of these.
Show some stones GM!Race it in the Baja 1000!
This simply cannot be a stickers and badging type ZR2. Make this something that not only looks the part, but acts the part. People will pay for it, if the content is there. Halfasss it and GM you will have slaughtered the cash cow that this ZR2 certainly can be.
