Buick Delivers 1,437 Units Of New Envision Crossover In June 2016

The all-new 2016 Buick Envision compact luxury crossover accounted for 1,437 deliveries in the United States in June 2016 — its first full month on the market.

The figures compare to 89 U.S. deliveries in May, when availability was partial.

Built on GM’s new D2 platform and imported from China, the 2016 Envision enters the premium compact luxury crossover segment dominated by the Acura RDX, Lexus NX and Volvo XC60, among others. The 2016 Envision has a starting price of $42,995 and is available exclusively with high levels of content — GM’s 2.0L LTG turbo-charged engine with all-wheel-drive and two high-end trim levels (Premium I and Premium II). By contrast, the 2017 Buick Envision will introduce the less potent, naturally-aspirated 2.5L LCV I4 engine with front-wheel-drive, along with three new trim levels with less features — thereby lowering the starting price by $8,005 to $34,990.

The GM Authority Take

The June sales performance is quite impressive given that Envision availability is still limited nationwide (thereby limiting its sales potential), that the vehicle has so far received virtually zero marketing (thereby limiting its awareness) and that only high-end units are currently sold at the relatively steep price of $42,995 or more. The results are also more indicative of the market’s towering demand for CUVs. As such, it will be interesting to see how the newest addition to the Buick family sells in the second half of the year.

In addition, the lower price of entry for the 2017 model — which is set to arrive by the end of this year (according to Buick) — along with the market’s seemingly insatiable thirst for crossovers, will likely result in the Envision becoming Buick’s biggest seller in the U.S. and in China. This could, in turn, cause GM to move production of the crossover from China to the NAFTA region.

  1. You’ve got to consider Buick’s Envision from China as being a success with sales of 1,437 vehicles in it’s second month and this is another telling example of the American appetite for cross-over vehicles.

  2. I would bet that if you surveyed all 1437, less than 10% are aware that it’s assembled in China. Of those 10% that are aware, few of them care. This would be a great vehicle for my wife, but no chance of even considering it until it’s assembled in NA, which is very unlikely in the next 2-3 years.

    1. …yet the only thing that will get it here is high domestic demand.

  3. I wouldn’t exactly call that a great success. In the same time period, they sold 1/2 as many Cascadas (which has a very limited market appeal, unlike smaller SUV’s) and 600 MORE Verano’s – a car they’re phasing out. Chevy moved almost 20,000 Equinox’s, down 10% but still, this is a much older variant on the theme.

In fact, if they managed that ratio for a year it would be barely 16,000 units.

    1. And if you want to compare “apples to apples”, Audi moved 4419 Q5’s and Acura moved 3593 RDX’s.

      1. Tom… you’re missing some crucial reasoning here.

        1. As scott3 mentioned, the Envision is a brand new vehicle/nameplate currently receiving zero marketing. There is very little public awareness of the car. How long have the rivals been around? Much, much, much longer.

        2. The other thing worth mentioning is that the Envision barely has any inventory levels; the car is very scarcely available across the dealer body, which also hinders its sales potential.

So, the fact that it did as many units as it did in its first full month with zero marketing and limited inventory is actually very impressive. If you want to talk apples to apples, wait until the car is marketed for awareness and until inventory levels normalize, as they are for the rivals. That will be apples to apples… and something tells me that at that point, it will sell very close in figures to those and possibly higher.

  4. Considering it is a totally new model to the market and most people are unaware of it let alone where it is from that is a nice start for a not so cheap vehicle.

As for comparing Apples to Oranges the Audi and Acura both are established models that are much better well known.

Buick was never going to be in the top 5 in sales with a new product like this two months in.

You take these numbers and account for the increase they will see through the year we will see them sell all they expect to import by next summer.

I would estimate few people know much about this as marketing really has not been in your face on this model yet.

  5. There is marketing out there on this SUV. It’s a commercial on tv of a dad taking his young son on a night time drive to get his son to fall asleep . People buying this car probably have no idea as to were it’s built . And may not even care . Only folks that follow sites like this are aware of the fact . If there was more information put out there it just might effect sales but you won’t hear about it from Buick salesman or GM .
People look at the content and size to make their decision on what to buy . Maybe if Donald Trump heard of this he would bring it up at one of his rallies .
I hope Buick sells all 30,000 units then maybe GM will bring production to the US . but I won’t hold my breath .

  6. I’m honestly considering this as my terrain replacement in the future. The more I saw this car, the more I like it. I do happen to be Asian (specifically Taiwanese and we technically don’t like the Chinese too much because they want to take over Tawian and stuff) though. I mean it’s really not fun if you buy a car based on politics. If the impala is sold and imported from US to Korea, how do you think the Koreans feel? I mean I’m pretty sure the stuff that’s made from a specific country is going to say it’s quality is going to made to last. So what gives? To me, I just really think that if you really like the car, where it manufactures should not matter.

  7. It’s so weird. I can’t see myself posting this anywhere as a ‘nice’ car to look at. Yet if someone told me they thought it was ugly I’d say they’re wrong. It’s just… sort of… there… with unoffensive but not inspired styling.

  8. Yes- the style is smart looking , but not one is outstanding over the other but some are really ugly . Buick needs these ( Envsion – Enspire ) in there lineup ,they are being over taken by a lot of other brands hurting Buick sales . The only thing that will hurt sales ( and I am one of those ) that it is built in CHINA , so there will not be one in my garage unless it is made in NA.

  9. its nice but its the beltline and side view that looks lame…..the raising side creases and wedged shaped side profile which resalts from the down sloped beltline which make it look weird and look like a poor mans BMW X5…..GM needs to get ride of the weird side profiles and make cars look like real cars.

  10. Was considering buying this but will not now that I know it is made in China.
