With the demise of Holden manufacturing, the end of the Holden Caprice comes, too. Currently, no solid news has surfaced over what will become of the luxurious, full-size sedan. While it does battle in the luxury segment in Oz, it serves as some U.S. police forces’ workhorse of choice.
Wheels snapped photos weeks ago of a 2016 Cadillac CT6 sitting in a residential Melbourne neighborhood, plated and all. No camouflage is present, either, and it looks to very much be a production CT6.
The question is, why was it there? Is Holden providing engineering backup for Cadillac abroad? Or is something else bigger being planned?
It certainly could be taken that a CT6 of sorts may replace the soon-to-expire Holden Caprice, but again, nothing of such has been remotely confirmed or brought up.
Currently, the Cadillac CT6 is the only vehicle riding on General Motor’s Omega platform. We know a platform like Omega was not engineered to support merely one car, so our friends down under may be in for a treat in the near future.

maybe a couple of CUVs.
An Omega-based Caprice would be nice. The CT6 is light enough to get up to 22/31mpg with the 2.0L Turbo Four, as well as 18/27mpg with the 3.6L V6 and 18/26 with the twin-turbo 3.0L V6. So the efficiency is there. It’s not like a Caprice would NEED to switch to front-drive for fuel economy, though the platform would be more expensive to use over FWD. Having said that, if they went down the front-drive road, the 2017 Buick LaCrosse would make sense if the Commodore is going to essentially be a next-gen Regal anyway. There will no doubt be some design cues shared here and there already. But I personally want to see SOMETHING at Holden stay RWD.
A Holden Caprice and a Chevrolet Caprice and Monte Carlo with a Buick based on the Omega could be very nice with also a Cadillac Eldorado coupe.
My big prediction is that a Buick/Holden RWD product will be built as a for door sedan based on Avista design.
Cars, especially large, aren’t selling well but this segment has always been good for GM and Omega needs scale.
Buick needs a real luxury sedan to be taken seriously and this will help Holden
