Vauxhall ‘Still Looking At’ Possible Production For GT Concept

Vauxhall and Opel still have a love affair for its well-received GT concept, shown at this year’s 2016 Geneva Motor Show. According to Auto Express, the brand is “still looking at” a possible production run for the sports car.

“We’re still looking at it, but for production we have a very busy next few years and making a small coupé a priority will be difficult,” said Vauxhall managing director Rory Harvey at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

However, if you dig the looks of the concept, Vauxhall-Opel chief designer stated the look will start to be infused into future vehicles. Specifically, the flowing body and front grille are likely to “inform other production models,” said Adams.

Rumors surfaced on Vauxhall engineers’ attempts to build a production GT around the rear-differential of the all-wheel drive Mokka crossover, but a compact, rear-wheel drive gearbox is still necessary to complete the driveline.

It’s better to know this car is stuck in limbo, rather than completely written off as vaporware. Now, we urge Opel-Vauxhall to find the heart to build it. Please.

  1. with the financial storm/uncertainty over europe, do you really think this niche car has a chance?

    1. Actually that may help it. It’s far less likely with dieselgate that VW will be able to. And FCA launched the 124 Spider, but doesn’t have the budget apparently to give it the right engine.

Most of the R&D will be done by Opel in mainland Europe anyways, Vauxhall will just need a RHD version – a missed opportunity with the prior-gen, that will be remedied by having this one made by Opel domestically… assuming it does get built.

It sounds like this is one of those Fiero cases where the engineers may not take no for an answer. True Story: Fiero team told GM they could fire them after being ordered to stop work on the project. Three times.

  2. This platform could be a hint at the smaller platform Cadillac is wanting for smaller but yet performance based cars ans CUV.

Something has been approved as there appears to be moment on some programs that were in neutral. The Code car at Chevy and the killing of the Buick Verano was not about killing the slot where it was just the car. A small platform like this could lead to many things here including a sport roadster at Cadillac.

As for the Fiero they did not say they could fire them but the program was canceled several times and it was hidden at a outside firm called Entech as the program used money from other programs till it was to a point it was represented as a high mileage commuter car that just happened to look like a sports car like Pontiac wanted. There is much more to this story But it could fill a book. Being a Fiero owner for 31 years and involved with the car since 1980 I kind of lived the story.

    1. Once it got to Entech, Fiero was pretty safe, and new GM management wanted their 50 mpg sporty wonder – which is what Fiero was supposed to be… with a wink and a nod.

Like the G8, every time I’ve tried to buy one it’s fallen apart. Like, literally, the fuel pump failed during the test drive on an ’87 Blue GT.

My big question is if they can gestate a non-performance version that actually achieves that goal. One thing I hated with the Solstice and Sky was the 2.4L base engine. Yes, it matched MX-5, but nobody wanted that. If they wanted that horsepower, they bought a Miata.

I’ve always wondered what a modern Opel GT would do in terms of fuel economy with Cruze’s diesel. Imagine the 50 mpg potential there!

      1. Well don’t jinx me but 31 trouble free years and just took a best of show at a BOP event. I had to take the T top out to take the trophy home.

This car is not facing the issues the Fiero and Solstice faces. If GM is going to do it they will do it right as they have with the rest of their cars. The money issues that the other two faces are not here and GM for once is now working as one vs. many divisions fighting over the same ground.

I expect that they are going to do this as a FWD AWD that will bring other models with is or it will be a RWD/AWD that may bring a platform that could serve the other divisions with a Sub Alpha. GM has shown they have been looking at both and I feel with some of the hints that are around they have moved forward but with which one?

As for the 2.4 Kappa the 2.4 makes up 2/3 of all of them made. Someone wanted them. The real issues were the compromises they had with using off the shelf parts that hurt them in weight and space inside and trunk. If they had some of their own parts like rear end and other things they did not have to design around you would have had many of these compromises avoided.

  3. No one will agree but GT looks Chevrolet to me. This is good for the sharing of future product such as Karl and Captiva.
