The 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is a beast, a very popular beast it seems. We spoke with Cadillac after the brand made mention of the 2016 CTS-V being “sold out” for the model year.
Following up with Stephen Martin, spokesman for the Cadillac V-series cars, he stated, “It became apparent at the end of the first quarter that we had more orders than we could fulfill.” Essentially, this has created a “sold out” scenario for the 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 power sedan.
When all is said and done, Cadillac will have built just under 2000 CTS-Vs. The most popular options? Carbon fiber and the darkened wheels were a customer favorite, with around 40-percent of orders adding the options.
Even more impressive is this stat: 51-percent of 2016 CTS-Vs built were customer orders, the highest average customer order.

My cousin has a 2016 Cadillac CTS-V and this is one of the most exciting vehicles that I have been in. It is awesome.
I love the black exterior with carbon fiber with black rims. I would called it Darth Vader.
Like I said before: the CTS is the only Cadillac on the market currently worth its value! And while people aren’t flocking to the standard, luxury, premium and V-Sport models, they’re at least soaking up the supercharged beast!!! Which means it must be worth every penny!
This self-imposed production limit is a stupid idea as Cadillac should try to sell as many cars as possible instead an artificial ceiling; Cadillac needs to do what the market wants.. and if there are over 2,000 people wanting to buy their CTS-V then they should be able to go out and buy it because people with $80K to spend on a car will NOT wait til the following year as they’ll just scratch Cadillac off their list and head to some foreign car dealership and this is what Cadillac needs to think about.
May have to do with outsourcing capacity because you have to remember that the CTS-V’s engine, transmission, Magnetic Ride and etc are shared with the ZO6.
Cadillac may not had an idea the CTS-V may be such a hot ticket and did not realize that demand will outnumber supply like it is with this case. I say that it is a good problem to have, IMO. Sounds like it is a first for Cadillac.
Makes me wonder about the ATS-V though of the ratio for supply vs. demand.
Other way to look at it is that people with 80K+ to spend do not want to see their car at every stoplight. The exclusivity has a lot more cache than the importance of availability.
People are willing to wait for what they want. Look at Tesla’s Model3 and the thousands plunking down their deposit for what could be up to a 4 year wait.
GM didn’t run of components to build Malibus.
Let’s have some perspective here.
This is nothing but good marketing leaved people wanting more. If the car is that good they will wait for it. People often desire what they can’t have more than what they can buy now.
This is image building. Not only is there demand but to be able to state you are sold out. Well lets pay attention to the date. It is June what? Yes June 15th.
Now when does the line change over to the 2017 models? between next week and the first week of July normally. The production of the 2017 models is just a matter of days out.
So technically yes Cadillac may be sold out of cars but they will not be for very long as one you have not been able to order a 2016 for a month anyways as orders were closed and they just sold off the remaining models on the lots in time to bring in the 2017 in a couple weeks.
This is again a big picture thing and you have to pay attention to the details here. This is good marketing and it has fooled some here and will fool many others in the market to appear that there is major demand here. The truth is they matched demand to the market needs pretty well. Generally they would not have sold many more cars than they did.
Also this will help sell more V sports too as it draws attention to the entire line.
The V series is not a high volume car and 2000-3000 is about right for expected take rates in the few markets it is in. Now when they go global it could expand more but it will never sell over 10K units a year nor do you want it to if you want people desire it.
If you note most performance models GM has build were all around 5,000 and less in the models in the last 8 years outside the Camaro SS and the Corvette.
The Z/28. ZL1, ZR1, Trailblazer SS, Previous V series, HHR SS. Cobalt SS and others GM performance division cars all sold 5K or less of each.
Performance models are good for image and good to draw desire but most sell in low volumes and that is why they demand such a high price on most. The one acceptation is the Camaro SS and it is one of the few that draws big numbers yet.
These are cars everyone wants but not many buy or can afford anymore. Hell my HHR SS was almost $30K Sticker back in 2008. That had a lot to do with only selling around 5K the first year and much less each and every following year. Same for the Cobalt SS. the Sedan sold in the hundreds a true low volume car.
This is why I caution on cars like a Malibu SS. You are not going to sell many and how much are people really going to pay. Save it for a car like the Buick GS that can better support the higher price at lower volumes.
The only real good cheap performance car is the Camaro V6 and Turbo. Both can be had for under $30K and do a pretty good job all around. Not much else can touch that other than the Mustang.
Although I am not one of the dissapointed customers who can’t buy one now , I think it is good for Cadillac to keep a model like this limited . Being an exclusive model it will not be under sold if they had built to many of these .
I think they did the right thing .
I rather the CTS-V is a CUV instead of a sedan.
Doesnt mean their sold to customers.
Limited production does do one thing.. as it opens the door and invite GM tuners to build their own version of the CTS-V like Hennessey Performance or Lingenfelter Performance Engineering.
At this point I think it is a mistake. Everyone of these ( though limited) sells Cadillac. My wife was not fan of the CTS. Her jaw dropped when she saw the V in the show room. Mine too. So would others if they ever saw one on the street. I am counting 1 so far.
Ok Lets put this into perspective for those who are not getting this is just a marketing ploy and a very good one I might add.
Past production numbers are.
2004 2461
2005 3508
2006 3052
2007 1176
2008 NA
2009 3035
2010 1745 sedan 1 coupe
2011 2085 Sedan 3224 Coupe 398 Wagon
2012 2012 Sedan 2286 Coupe 575 Wagon
2013 1133 Sedan 1519 Coupe 416 Wagon
2014 362 Sedan Discontinues part way in the year 998 Coupe 753 Wagon
2015 I do not have the limited coupe sales here but they were very low.
2016 Just under 2000 Sedans with later start up in production season than the other models.
If you have not seen any this years models it is because you it is not be cause there are fewer than past years sedans.
Again keep in mind production on the 2017 is only days away.
This was just pure good marketing and it even fooled some of the fans as well as the general public.
It’s the middle of June we are coming to the end of the model year run (July/August). I say good planning to sell your scheduled lot of speciality cars. If you want CTS V put your order in for 2017.
I would perfure a CUV over a sedan.
I dont beleave that all 51% of CTSV WERE ORDER BY THE PUBLIC. THEY WERE DEALERS WHO BOUGHT THEM CTSV
Yes that is true !!!! dealers were ordering them & my DREAM CAR IS IN MY DRIVEWAY I DO BELEAVE THE DEALER WERE I GOT MY CTS.V I DO BELEAVE HE WAS GOING TO KEEP IT GEN.3 FASTEST GM. CADDY EVER MADE IN 2016 WELL FASTEST GM. BUILT AT THAT TIME !!!!!!!! MY Rocket ship CTS V is 2016 is phantom gray 2 tone bottom 3″s all THE way around car
Carbon fiber and darkened wheels were a customer favorite. 40% opted for that option. Well, that’s not a favorite. It would have to be 51% and up to be the favorite.
