Simon Pagenaud Takes Pole At Belle Isle, Helio Castroneves Sets New Track Record

Simon Pagenaud prevailed in the Firestone Fast Six qualifying session for this weekend’s IndyCar Chevrolet Dual in Detroit, taking the Verizon P1 Award as numerous cars in the field shattered the previous lap record.
The fastest time of the day came at the hands of Pagenaud’s Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves, who lapped the tight Belle Isle GP circuit in 1:14.6899, shattering the previous record by over 1.5 seconds. He didn’t have the pace to hang with Pagenaud in the final qualifying session, however, posting a lap of 1:14.9285 to the Frenchman’s 1: 14.9166.
Juan Pablo Montoya completed a sweep of the top three qualifying positions for Penske with a lap of 1:15.5659. The fastest Honda driver of the day was Indy 500 pole-sitter James Hinchcliffe, who qualified fourth with a fast lap of 1:15.7708. Indy 500 runner-up Carlos Munoz rounds out the top five, while reigning series champ Scott Dixon will start sixth.
IndyCar will take to the track for the second practice session of the weekend at 10:05 a.m. ET tomorrow before for the first of the weekend’s two scheduled races kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
