Opel is remembering its time in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where it continues to assemble axles, engines and seat structures.
On June 3, 1966, Opel opened the Kaiserslautern assembly plant with 2,500 employees. Nine million engines, 19 million axles and nearly 39 million seat structures have been assembled over 50 years, and currently produces the majority of body components for the 2016 Opel Astra K.
“Since it was opened 50 years ago, the Opel Kaiserslautern plant has continuously evolved and mastered many complex production launches. The entire team can be proud of this,” said Plant Manager Manfred Gellrich. Currently the plant is preparing to produce new component assemblies for another model.
To celebrate 50 years in the region, Opel will invite the public to an open house for a behind the scenes look at the production process on June 9, 2016.
