Chase Elliott led Practice 1 for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway today, posting a lap of 201.630 mph. in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet SS.
The 85-minute session saw cars crack the 215 mph mark as they approached Turn 1, the result of NASCAR’s new low-down force aerodynamics package. However the aero kit provides less grip in the corners, so average lap speeds during Practice, Qualifying and the race will be slower than in 2015 and 2014.
Martin Truex Jr., who put on a clinic on his way to a record-breaking win at Charlotte two weeks ago, was second fastest in the session with a lap of 201.314 mph. Not surprisingly, the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas were also in the thick of things, with Carl Edwards fourth fastest and Denny Hamlin fifth fastest. Dale Earnhardt split the two for fourth with a 201.213 mph lap.
Tune into FS1 at 4:15 p.m. to catch the Coors Light Pole Qualifying session for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at MIS.
