General Motors’ telematics subsidiary, OnStar, is offering promotional data passes for its in-vehicle Wi-Fi service.
Three packages are part of the promo, split up by gigabytes:
Data Pass | Price |
---|---|
3GB/1-Day | $25 |
5GB/3-Day | $35 |
10GB/3-Day | $60 |
So, what can you do with all that data? Well, 3GB of data is good for approximately:
- 100 hours of streaming music or
- Over 16 hours of streaming video or
- Over 200 hours of surfing the web or
- Over 6,000 social media posts
Available in most 2015 model year and all 2016 model year GM vehicles (except for the Nissan NV200 Chevy City Express), the OnStar Wi-Fi hotspot is based on a 4G LTE data connection in the vehicle. Up to seven devices (such as tablets, phones, or computers) can connect and have internet access simultaneously.
The special data passes would make a great addition for those planning on taking their vehicle on a road trip during the extended 2016 Memorial Day Weekend.
Editor’s note: we’re not sure when these promotional passes expire, but the offer was sent to customers the week of May 23rd, 2016.

Way too overpriced. WiFi in the car is a cool feature but I don’t need another bill that’s why after my free subscription ended I didn’t purchase a plan. Total joke.
Obviously, you don’t *have* to buy it. The more economical option is to add the car to your AT&T mobile plan (if you are a customer) and have it act just like any other device on the plan.
I agree with Glenn. The prices they charge for this and other services are UNREAL! Give me a package of OnStar, Sirius, Wi-Fi, Traffic and Weather for around $25 per month, and they will have me. Otherwise, they can keep their stuff! I look at value for what I pay.
Just asking – but how hackable is this mobile WiFi service?
I don’t mean to go all Snowden, but I’ve read how unsecure everything from public wifi @ Starbucks, etc., is, to wifi service on planes, to hotel lobby service.
The techies are advising a VPN (virtual private network), and/or using two-way encrypted services like WhatsApp.
Just asking – I’d hate to be hacked or compromised if I could help it …
Everybody is missing the fact that especially if you’re an AT&T customer the 4GLTE hotspot can be added into your family plan utilizing the overall data in your plan for $10 per month. I’ve been using it in my Malibu since last September and it works very well and its much less than the prices advertised here & I’ve never used up all my data in my plan.
Exactly! Thank you Charlie.
