Chevy-Powered, Fox Body Mustang Tears Up The Drag Strip With 700 HP: Video

LS swap the world right? Maybe. If you’re reading this, your answer is likely a resounding yes, and this particular swap should keep you all giddy.

Here we have a typical fox body Mustang, except its Coyote 5.0-liter V8 has been ripped from the bonnet in favor of a Chevrolet, 5.3-liter V8 engine. Additionally, the Mustang is also reportedly running a healthy 300-shot of nitrous, putting down 700 hp at its peak as it shuffles merely 2,975-pounds. Yes, that figure includes the driver.

This type of engine is a very obvious choice for engine swappers across the world. It’s easy to maintain, and loves to make gobs of power with tweaks. Combine that with the affordability of fox body Mustangs, and it’s a drag race match made in heaven.

What’s that old joke? Ah, yes, at least Ford owners circled their mistake. Just kidding. Maybe.

  1. I’m a Chevrolet man but GM’s LS series has more in common with the old 351W/302 H.O. Ford V8’s than it has in common with the old SBC from the Chevrolet Motor Division. Even the sound of the GM’s 5.3/6.0 engines is more Ford like with the same firing order. Chevrolet’s SBC and BBC had a distinctive sound with that old firing order. I actually prefer it…

To GM’s credit, once Ford put all their V8 eggs into the Modular basket, GM took the ball and ran with it. They took the bore spacing of Chevrolet’s SBC, some of the Ford traits from their pushrod engines, then added some modern magic that neither engines had. They came up with the ultimate pushrod V8 no doubt. Many, many Ford guys run the LS in their Mustangs. I love the 6.0/6.2 myself. I just prefer the sound of Chevrolet’s old firing order to the GM/Ford firing order. Though I do understand why they did it for main bearing longevity. I’d kind of like to see a modern take on the BBC with canted valves!

  2. So this guy purchased this Coyote swapped or previously swapped it to Coyote ? Then swapped a 5.3 in it? That’s gotta be the stupidest thing going.

Most LS swapped fox guys I know we’re Chevy guys to start with. (Not all). I’m a Fox body guy, my cars all original and will most likely stay that way. I like the Windsor for my power goals but I will help my Chevy nut cousin LS3 swap a Fox. He’s done with his camaro and wants an affordable drag car. I can’t argue with that.

Sean are we sure this guy didn’t pull the 5.0 SBF Windsor that would of came factory in this car?

  3. I am thinking no Coyote here too. Few people would give up the Windsor based engine for a Coyote to race.

    1. They have the Coyote stock class now, it’s highly competitive so the swap is getting done.

  4. This isn’t the first one. Seen one in Florida running for a few years.
