Chevy Volt Sales Rise To Nearly 2,000 Units Per Month, Outsell Nissan Leaf In April 2016

The Chevrolet Volt continued its streak of outselling its closest rival — the Nissan Leaf — in April 2016 by recording twice as many units sold during the month in the United States.

Chevy Volt sales grew 119.12 percent to 1,983 units in April 2016 while Leaf sales fell 49.32 percent to 787 units during the same time frame. The results mean that the Volt outsold the Leaf by more than twice as much, or a significant 1,196 units more.

The story is similar for the first four months of the year: the Volt accounted for 5,970 deliveries, 2,252 units higher than the 3,718 Leaf sales.

  1. It was recently disclosed that Cadillac had stopped production of the ELR and it made me think whether Chevy could salvage the parts from Cadillac to create a 2-door Volt.

  2. This data makes it look like the number people in the market for either of these cars is not growing, it’s just a battle for which direction they go. At least until gas prices go up again…

    1. Yes, it does look that way doesn’t it. I’m still impressed by Volt’s numbers in lieu of the the 200+ mile EVs on the horizon, but I think your petrol price comment is on the mark.

  3. The reason is that Leaf sales are dropping is simply because all of us with Leafs are either waiting for Nissan to announce a bigger battery or we are going to buy Chevy Bolts. Comparing the Volt to the Leaf is liking comparing Apples to Oranges. The Leaf has more electric range and can use the HOV lanes, the Volt cannot.

    1. Actually the volt can use the HOV lanes here in Ontario as it has green plates

  4. I know the Volt is not making any money, but it is worth it. If gas were $4 or $5 a gallon, which it will be someday, then this technology is warranted. Don’t be surprised if Volt sales hit 60k units per year in the not too distant future.

  5. The combination of the Volt and Bolt will do well in their market . And with gas prices sneaking back up to year ago levels who knows how much higher it will go . What needs to happen is to build the infrastructure in this country for these vehicles.
