Cadillac won’t be getting radical with the refresh of the 2017 Cadillac CTS. In fact, it’s more a case of hand-me-downs from the 2016 Cadillac CT6 if anything.
As seen in new spy shots at Automotive News, the 2017 CTS will arrive later this year with a revised front grille and a slightly reworked rear end. And we mean slightly.
The exhaust outlets in the rear are now vertical, rather than horizontal like the current CTS sedan, and the front grille adds a fourth horizontal bar, up from the current three. The grille we can forgive, but the vertical exhaust outlets give the rear a slightly harsh look, instead of the elegant horizontal design.
We’d expect powertrains to stay the same with the 2017 CTS, while an all-new Cadillac CT5 sedan is readied for 2018 or 2019.

Totally agree. Why did they even bother? Only change of any consequence are the super ugly vertical exhaust outlets.
Yes, these vertical exhaust outlets look really unusual to me too.
At least, now everyone interested will be able to reveal the model year by just looking at the exterior – CTS with these controversial vertical outlets at the rear and four grille bars at the front is 2017 CTS, and not any other model year CTS. The very last CTS model year, presumably.
I think Cadillac should have kept the wreath around its emblem. That’s not really critical to the brand’s success but the old emblem was more familiar.
What were they thinking with those exhaust tips. Like Martin said, why even bother. Why make any changes at all since the car is on its last leg of life.
This is what you guys sound like:
Headline: ’17 Cadillac XXX doesn’t receive any updates.
You: Why didn’t they make any updates?!!!
Headline: ’17 Cadillac XXX receives following updates.
You: Why did they even bother with this updates?!!!
You have that right. Not happy if they change anything and upset if they do. What the Hell?
these are small changes that will buy time till the new model is ready and some of the styling changes will be incorperated here in a small way. Similar to the last gen Camaro when the nose got a make over and was narrowed up to be more in line with the 6th gen.
They tend to do these changes to not upset people with major changes with the replacement models. I know that it is hard to believe but they would complain then too. Just look at all the complaints with the new C7 that are mostly over with now.
I think the point is if you are going to make changes then make significant ones.
I do agree that human nature is to complain.
ahhahahah lmfao and thats it? At least they could make a full led headlights.
What a shame…
Really nasty!
Wow! Who designed this?…and who approved it?
Not an improvement at all!
The front end now looks like a baby CT6 and the designer who came up with those messed up exhaust tips needs to take a vacation ( unpaid ) . The car was having a hard enough time selling as it was , but now Cadillac really took any update that was good and %ucked it up . Those tips are the same as on the Sixteen Concept , but it worked for that car .
Come on Cadillac ……you can do better !
Absolutely. They seem to be going all-in on the BMW “same” strategy, except the biggest problem I have with the CT6 is it looks too similar to the (less expensive) CTS. Now they’re changing the CTS to be even *more* similar?
Man, I sure hope the CUVs are hits, b/c sedan sales are not getting it done, nor will they even with this new CT6 (which is a very good car; it just is not compelling from a price, design, or performance perspective to rack up a considerable increase in sales in a very competitive and down market for luxury sedans).
Regarding CT6, man, you’re saying the same what I say in my comment, just in different words – here:
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2016/05/gm-will-license-its-patented-aluminum-to-steel-spot-welding-technology-to-other-automakers/
So, I’m not alone in my perception regarding CT6 – it’s a great car, but not awesome enough to stand against its advanced rivals.
The wording is confusing. “The grille we can forgive, but the horizontal exhaust outlets give the rear a slightly harsh look, instead of the elegant horizontal design.” Did you mean vertical?
I disagree with a lot of you guys on here. You can not give a formal judgement on a car with a dark exterior paint like this. And how can you judge at the rear of the car with the pictured angled and not directly from behind is beyond me. It may look awkward but I say wait until actual production photos come out to really judge the car. That angle is tricky to judge and we have no way of knowing for sure how aligned the vertical exhaust is under the taillights until we get better pics.
By the looks of the pics, looks like the rear have been smoothed out a bit but can’t say for sure.
Hopefully they have made some practical changes like the eliminating/changing the bright Bose insignia on the rear package shelf that reflects into the middle of the rear window view on all sunny days.
Scrap the ugly touches and address some practical issues!
Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen needs to remember that doing nothing is the quickest way to getting a pink slip because people expect to see some type of update besides a modest nose job as they want to know that Cadillac is making an effort to improve.
