Minnesota Speeder Clocked At 171 MPH In 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS

It seems one driver got carried away with his 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, because 171 mph is pretty damn fast to be moving down a public highway. We get speeding, we like the “nine over your fine, but ten you’re mine” rule,  but this is a bit much.

The Duluth News Tribune reports a Minnesota police officer was patrolling Highway 61 when the 2016 Camaro SS literally blew by him, and was clocked at 171 mph.

“You get used to seeing people going 65 or 70 and what that looks like. But I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s like a rocket on wheels at that point,” Hermantown Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Padden said.

The officer stated he accelerated up to 135 mph to put the 2016 Camaro SS in his sights. Thankfully, the driver slowed and pulled over as soon as the officer made contact with the vehicle. The 36 year-old driver, who has not been identified, was issued a misdemeanor careless driving, which carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and license revocation.

  4. The car was black. Do the 2016 Camaros have a different speed limiter? My 2013 is set at 155. I know it is possible to get rid of the limiter through tuning, but is it gone from the factory?

    1. Different years and models have different or no limits depending on their tires in most cases. They will limit a car based on the speed rating of the tires used.

I think the new SS has no limiter.

  5. i think the tires might go to 186 mph

  6. At 171 mph, why did he pull over? They could never catch him.
    Well, maybe with stop sticks.

    1. I’d imagine he didn’t even see the cop at that speed. I’ve been +160 mph on the interstate many times and you really don’t focus on (or see) anything else but the road in front of you. Especially at night lol. Otherwise I’m sure he would of hit up the first exit he could and disappeared.

  7. Personally I wouldn’t have given him a ticket if he pulled over for me. I would of just wanted to see the car. Amazing that a factory Camaro can obtain those kind of speeds these days.

  8. He probably wanted the ticket just to prove he was running 171 instead hearing his friends say “Ya sure, 171, right, uh-huh.”
