General Motors Recalls 1.03 Million Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Trucks Over Seatbelt Issue

General Motors is recalling certain units of the 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra pickup trucks over an issue with the seatbelt system.

The defect: the flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the vehicle can fatigue and separate over time as a result of the driver repeatedly bending the cable when entering the seat.

The hazards: if the flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the vehicle fatigues and separates, the performance of the seat belt system will deteriorate. This can lead to injury during a crash or accident.

Reported injuries or fatalities: this issue was discovered through warranty data, and there have been no reports of crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this issue.

Affected vehicles:

  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500:
    • 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • GMC Sierra 1500:
    • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500
    • 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Number of vehicles affected: 1,037,982 units globally, which includes:

  • United States: 895,232 units
  • Canada: 108,604 units
  • Mexico: TBA
  • Middle East: TBA
  • South America: TBA

The fix: for trucks in the field, dealers will inspect the cable sleeve for wear and replace the tensioner if necessary. Dealers will also add a bracket to reposition the tensioner, and modify the side shield opening to provide more clearance for the tensioner. Customers will be notified by General Motors about the required action.

For trucks that are still on dealer lots, a stop-sale of 2014 and 2015 model year pickups has been issued. Dealers will repair the vehicles prior to delivering them to customers.
